The Acting-Prime Minister (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) has been advised of the activities of the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) in ' Washington, On Monday Mr Fraser held a press conference, and spoke mainly on New Zealand’s war effort, manpower needs, the Canberra agreement in the light of New Zealand-United States relations, and answered a number of questions. After lunching at the British Embassy with Lord Halifax he inspected the chancery of the New Zealand Legation, and had discussions with rhembers of the staff. Later he met members of Congress in the ’Senate room. A number of Congressmen were later entertained at the New Zealand Legation with members of the United Kingdom Empire Parliamentary delegation, who are en route to New Zealand. On Tuesday Mr Fraser was to have discussions with the Governor of Tahiti, the Secretary of the Navy (Colonel Frank Knox), and Admiral E. J. King. Com-mander-in-Chief of the United States Navy.—(P.A.) The Hon. Mr Justice Northcroft, who is at present in Christchurch, will visit Dunedin next week. A vote of sympathy was passed with Archbishop West-Watson, who is a patient at St. George’s Hospital, and the hope that he would make a speedy recovery was expressed at a meeting of the Society of the Protection of Women and Children last evening. Mr A. Anderson, chairman of the Ellesmere County Council, has consented to nomination for a seat on the Christchurch Catchment Board, as representative of the Ellesmere, Springs, and Halswell Counties, and part of Wairewa. For many years Mr Anderson has been a member of the North Rakafa River Board. Mr F. A. Kitchingham, Mayor of Greymouth for the last two terms, will again be a candidate for the Mayoralty at the election next month. He made this decision following the presentation of a petition signed by more than 150 representative citizens of Greymouth. No other candidates have yet been announced, though there is a possibility of a Labour candidate. , Advice was received from Cr. J. Liggins, at a meeting of the Waimairi County Council last evening, that he would be unable, for health reasons, to contest the forthcoming local body elections. . Tributes to Cr. Liggms’s service to the council were paid by Crs. W. J. Walter, W. P, Spencer, C. W. Moore, and F. S. Scott. It was decided to send a letter to Cr. Liggins, expressing councillors’ appreciation of his work, and \yishing him a speedy recovery.
