Both horses will now race at Wlngatul. Unfortunate Development Royal Writ raced himself out of hack company when he won the Challenge Stakes at Riccarton last month, but was still eligible to run out his hack engagement in,the concluding event at Oamaru. Unfortunately because of an eleventhhour mishap, he was unable to take his place in the field. He was being led round the birdcage when Paladeo, who had just been mounted, reared into him and knocked him over. Royal Writ soon showed signs of suffering from a strained back, and it was promptly decided to withdraw him from the race. The trouble was not considered likely to have any serious effects, but the decision not to take any risks with him In the circumstances was a wise one. Rockery Repeats Success The Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase at Oamaru was a spectacular contest, and was won by Rockery, who repeated his performance of 12 months ago by going to the front in the middle stages and winning easily from Benevolent and Night Scout, the last-named filling second place last year. Rockery had charge with a round to go from Night Scout and Ballyaggan with a gap to Prince Ruenalf and Benevolent, and another to Gay Boa. Benevolent made a fast forward move in the back stretch, and closed on Rockery going to the last fence, the pair being then well clear of the remainder. Benevolent showed signs of wearing down Rockery, but in spite of his rider’s vigorous efforts, stuck his toes in going/ to the fence, and scrambled over it. Rockery, in the meantime, cleared it well and carried on for an easy win, while Benevolent managed to hold on for second money from Night Scout. Ballyaggan, Valantua and Gay Boa finished at Intervals well back. The only mishap was suffered by Maritimus, who dropped his rider after blundering at the first fence. Rockery won well, but his task would have been much mpre difficult If Benevolent, who had jumped well, had mastered the last fence. Banco Returns The Burnside Hack Handicap, for apprentice riders, at Oamaru, was contested by a large field, and although the race was won easily by Banco, there was a thrilling tussle for the minor places. Banco followed Last Effort and Star Wink into the straight, but the run home had not been long In progress before he was out in front. His rider did not take any risks of his mount stopping as he kept at him until the post was reached, several lengths to the good. Dash o’ Dink finished solidly into second place a head in front of Last Effort, with another head to Prince Dolomite and Night Believer, The favourite, Renarde, was slow early, and was never In a likely position. Banco showed a decided Improvement on his recent form, and may now live up to his earlier reputation. A Smart Filly Investors fared well in the Trial Handicap at Oamaru, the three placed horses all carrying strong support. Royal Review quickly ran to the front, and was later joined by Miss Myra, the pair entering the straight abreast In front of Saldowa, As Required, Salmi, and Waltzing Matilda. Saldowa shot to the front early in the run home, and although Waltzing Matilda threw out a strong challenge and overhauled Miss Myra, the Invercargill filly was never in danger. Royal Review was a fair fourth in front of Salmi and Manakore. The winner, by Salmagundi from Miss Redowa, created a-big impression by her performance, and is one likely to carry on as a winner. Fairy Bard’s Success Silver Sox was withdrawn from the Winter Cup at Oamaru and was sent out a staunch favourite for the Farewell Hack Handicap. He was not well placed over the first half of the joprney, and with Hughsotis setting a sound pace out in front, he did not Improve his position to any extent until nearing the straight. Hughsotis created a stir by clearing out from the field shortly after the start, and he was several lengths clear of Fairy Bard at the half-mile. He was still going strongly rounding the home turn, but then commenced to ease up, and Fairy Bard drew past him early in the run home. Sascha and Silver Sox then became prominent, but Fairy Bard had the issue in hand a good way from the post Sascha held off Silver Sox for second money with Commemorate a length away in fourth place in front of Hughsotis and Ruler. Fairy Bard is a good-looking dark chestnut gelding by Nigger Minstrel from Fairy Dart by Last Dart, and more success is in view for him. Horse Destroyed In the Waimnta Hurdles, at the Poverty Boy meeting on Saturday, Val Lu fell at the six furlongs post. He received severe Injuries, and had to be destroyed. Allied Talks In Washington—Mr Roosevelt at his press conference said he could not say anything helpful concerning his talks with Mr Churchill. Developments were unlikely until Mr Churchill's visit was practically over. Mr Roosevelt added that he thought he would ask Mr Churchill to join him at his press conference perhaps next week. —Washington, May 14.
