CURRENT NOTES

Motions of sympathy with Mrs C. W. Leete and with Mesdames H. and E. Woodill in their bereavement were passed at the May meeting of the Akaroa Women’s Institute. Members of the Christchurch Ladies’ Golf Club were hostesses at the Welcome Club for afternoon tea and tea on Saturday, and the St. Albans War Workers were hostesses for supper. About 360 men were present. The Canterbury Seed Company entertained about 300 servicemen on Sunday, when the concert programme was arranged by Miss S. Down. Tea was provided for 120 servicemen at the Young Men’s Christian Association on Sunday by the Marldon, Ltd. Messrs S. Buckler and H. Lee led the concert and the following gave items: —Misses Mollie Metson, Vera Martin, Eva Davies, and Mr James Grenfell (songs), “Muriel and Grace” (vocal duet), Mr A. Johnson (cornet solo), “Grace and Les” (harmonica duet), “Tiny and Ned,” ventriloquist items. The newly-elected committee of the Riccarton sub-branch of the Plunket Society held its first monthly meeting in the Riccarton Town Hall, Mrs H. S. S. Kyle presiding. The Plunket nurse’s report for April was as follows; —Visits to homes, 37; visits to rooms, adults 199, babies 200. The matron of the Stratheona Home Training Hostel reported at the monthly meeting of the board of managers that the health of the trainees had been good, that they had had examinations in the theory and practice of cooking, and also one set by a Plunket nurse. They had attended meetings of the Women’s Institute and Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union, and had taken part in the Anzac Day parade at Pleasant Point. Gifts of household linen, fruit, flowers, vegetables, and a ram had been received. Miss Helen Kinnear, K.C., of Port Colborne, Ontario. Canada, has been appointed county court judge for Haldimand and is to be local judge of the Ontario High Court of Justice during her tenure as county court judge. Miss Kinnear is believed to be the first woman in Canada to receive so high a judicial appointment. SOLDIERS PARCELS.
