ASHBURTON COUNTY R.C. HANDICAP WON BY KEVIN SUCCESSES FOR SHAM BOY AND LAST EFFORT The Ashburton County facing Club was favoured with fine weather for its autumn fixture on Saturday, and there was a large attendance. The track was slightly greasy for the early races after overnight rain and a frost, but times were generally fast. The sum of £20.513 10s was handled against £17,266 on the corresponding day last year, when rain fell most of the afternoon. King Gustavo was taken out of the Ashburton Handicap, and the small field of four had an appreciable effect on the day's turnover. Dominate was sent out a little better favourite than Kevin, and the pair fought out a hard finish. Eulogist again held the role of pacemaker to the straight entrance, but compounded as soon as Dominate drew up to him. Dominate’s chance then looked bright, but Kevin soon tackled him and gradually wearing him down beat him by a head. Four lengths back Military Maid beat Eulogist by a head. The first half of the journey was slowly run and this suited Kevin, who was never far away. This was his first win this year. Dominate had every chance, but failed under pressure. Military Maid and Eulogist were both outclassed on the day. Sham Boy had his first win for his present owner since changing hands a year ago. He ran away from his opponents over the last furlong of the Flying Handicap. Practically the whole field of nine were bunched turning for home, and inside the final furlong Night Pal was in charge. He was then challenged by Sham Boy. who had no trouble in beating him. Rawhamai, who was checked at a critical stage of the run home, finished well into third place, a head in front of Mauretania, who beat Shikari by a head.
