PROTECTION FROM SHARKS

WASHINGTON, May 7. A substance has been discovered which drives sharks away from men adrift in shark-infested waters, according' to a Navy announcement. The nature of the “sharp repellent” is a closely-guarded secret, but the ingredients are easily and cheaply obtained. It is expected to prove of great value to navy and merchant seamen. Laboratory experiments conducted in Florida and Ecuador waters revealed that sharks invariably refused a tempting bait when a small quantity of shark repellent was suspended in the water nearby. The bait used is believed to be far more attractive to sharks than human flesh.
