SECOND AMBERLEY FAIR

HAWARDEN RATES MAINTAINED REST TWO-TOOTH PRICE 40/The Amberley ewe fair for the northern section of the district was held yesterday. The smaller entries which have been a feature of the earlier fairs continued yesterday, the number penned being about 11,500 head, as against 22,000 at the first fair last Monday, and just on 16,000 for the corresponding fair last year. Barely a third of this number were two-tooths. These were of similar class to those at the first sale, and over the earlier steges no more than maintained Hawarden rates. The sale sharpened when the older sheep were offered, and this to a slight extent reacted on the demand for the remainder of the twotooths sold in the final stages of the market. The older sheep sold remarkably well throughout, and, considering quality, were slightly dearer than at Hawarden. The older sheep, with worn mouths, of the. 17s to 20s class, were in particularly strong request, a number of these pens in the later stages of the sale making within 3s or 4s of better-condi-tioned ewes with guaranteed ages sold ;n near-by pens. The short entry, following those at earlier fairs, is indicating a general scarcity, and this possibly is an explanation for the demand for the older ewes, of which, moreover, there was a heavy killing last season. Yesterday most of the big lines were bought in one lot, indicating that buyers are filling their needs rather than risk the future trend of the market. The fair was notable from the fact that there was not a passing. Top two-tooth price was 40s for a twotruck lot of 127 ewes from A. Gillanders (Domett) (the same as at Hawarden). as against 37s for the top pen a week earlier. Several other pens sold at 38s and 375. Numerous pens of moderately conditioned two-tooths ranged from 28s to 31s. There was a fair proportion of very small twoI tooths, and these sold reasonably in comparison with aged ewes. The improvement for older sheep on Hawarden rates was indicated by the number of pens yesterday which made 255, a figure which was exceeded only in a few instances at Hawarden. Top price yesterday was 27s 6d, secured by E. Edridge (Mount Sandbush). Five-year ewes sold at up to 19s 6d, and older sorts made less than 16s in Very few cases. THE SALES Estate C. The entry at the Pleasant Point ewe fair contained approximately 12,000 sheep and the quality of the lines forward was well up to the standard of previous years. About 4500 two-tooth ewes were yarded, this number being well in excess of last year, and the whole of this class sold under very keen demand at prices about 2s a head better than the previous fair. Four and five-year ewes were up by about 4s a head. The sale generally was considered to be the best for many years at Pleasant Point, and only an odd line was "passed at auction. Prices were as follows:—Extra good two-tooth Romney ewes, 37s to 42s 3d; medium to good. 33s to 365; inferior, 25s to 325; extra good two-tooth halfbred ewes, 33s to 36s 9d; medium to good, 28s to 325; inferior, 20s to 275; extra good four-year ewes, 25s to 275; good, 21s to 23s 6d; medium, 18s 6d to 20s 6d; Romney five-year ewes, 15s to 18s; four and six-tooth Romney ewes, 28s 6d to 32s 6d; medium to good ewe lambs, 22s to 24s 6d.
