REBATE OP RATE PENALTIES
SUMNEK COUNCIL CRITICISED
“I don’t think that in fairness to others we ought to write off these amounts so casually; everyone knows that these accounts have to be met and a period of six months and two weeks is sufficient notice,” said Cr. W. Machm after several requests for rate penalties to be rebated had been granted by the Sumner Borough Council last night. “Every time such a proposal is brought before this council I intend to oppose it, excepting in the case of dire distress” said Cr. Machm. Cr. Burgess: It is not a matter of being casual. In each case the details are well known to the council. The Mayor (Mr J. E. Tait): I am sure that the council deals very fairly with these cases, which always come up at this time of the year, and where leniency is granted there have been very few mistakes. Later in the evening, when another request, reported on by the _ town clerk, was before the council, it was granted in view of the record submitted. Cr. Machin voting against it. To a question as to whether he wished his vote recorded he replied, “Yes.” A voice: The recording angel!
