Damage to Headstones.—“l have repeatedly warned children lately about climbing on the headstones in the Ashburton cemetery.” stated a letter from the sexton (Mr W Pritchard) received at * meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council last evening. “In spite of- this a marble cross was broken off a headstone a few weeks ago,” the letter continued. “It is possible that a serious accident may arise from this practice. Also, cattle and sheep often get into the cemetery through people leaving the gates open.” The letter was referred to the cemetery committee. Tribute To Lieutenant P. Gillett.— “He was a good and faithful soldier all his service, and had become a fine and devoted officer.” This tribute, paid to the late Lieutenant Peter Gillett by his brigadier, was mentioned in a letter to the Kaikoura County Council by Lieutenant Gillett’s father, Dr. P. E. C. Gillett (Rangiora), who thanked the council for its expression of sympathy in his loss. Lieutenant Gillett was well known in Kaikoura.
