NATIONAL SAVINGS
SPECIAL WEEK’S APPEAL
BEGINS
Hopes that Christchurch would be able this week—which is being observed throughout the country as a National Savings Week—again to surpass its Quota of £9313, were expressed at yesterday's meeting of the Christchurch National Savings Committee. Last week the quota was exceeded by Friday night, the week's total being £11,252. Fifteen other offices in the district exceeded their quotas. Although Christchurch starts the week’s special appeal with £1939 in hand, the committee hopes that this will not cause any over-confidence, and consequent falling off in national savings deposits and purchases of bonds. The ambition is to reach the quota not only this week but in the following weeks, so that the national savings flag may be kept flying continuously. A feature of this week's special appeal is the co-operation being given by a number of retail firms, who have purchased for resale large amounts of national savings coupons. These coupons are of the value of ss, and may be used to open national savings accounts or to add to them. Although the coupons may also be purchased at post offices, this scheme is designed to foster the use pf the coupons as Christmas gifts, and people are more likely to buy them for this purpose at retail shops than to make a special visit to a post office for them. A feature of last week’s record figures was that many small post offices yielded abnormally large totals. One small office, which usually showed a daily total of only £1 or so. on Thursday yielded £7OO. Saturday’s total for Christchurch, instead of being £7OO or £BOO, the amount expected, was ,£1043.
