CONSCRIPTION FOR NATIONAL RESERVE
Sir,—l see that so far the recruiting for the National Reserve is satisfactory, but why recruiting? Conscription, if applied to all. should be universal, and general mobilisation is called for in the present circumstances. A large number of men aged 30 to 40 are doing their share in the Home Guard, but hundreds are not. Prosperous businessmen with one or two children, who missed the last war. are escaping this, except for minor inconveniences. Why should our husbands, who fought in the last war and are not so young now. and our 18-year-old sons have to go into the front line to defend the wives and children and the healthy, active bodies of such as these? No 18-year-old lad should be placed in front line positions while older responsible men are available. These men have a greater stake in the country than the young lads and should be made to defend it, if they will not do so voluntarily.—Yburs, etc.. W.W.S.A. December 15. 1941.
