FUTURE OF THE GARDENS

# EFFECT OF THE WAR

The future of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens was discussed by the chairman (Mr Henry Kitson) at yesterday’s meeting of the Christchurch Domains Board. The mobilisation of men for the defence forces had had a serious effect on the staff, Mr Kitson said. This in one way was unfortunate because the .urtailment of petrol supplies must mean that hundreds more people would visit the gardens. However, every endeavour would be made to maintain the present standard. It would, for instance, be better to kcqp Townend House running rather than The less interesting winter gardens. It was considered that petrol would still be available for cutting the grass in the gardens; if it was not available in the park then the grass would simply have to be left to grow long. That had been done before, and it might be a good thing.
