OBITUARY

* PILOT OFFICER R. 0 FOSTER

Mr R. E. Foster, of 37 Pevcrcl street, Riccarton, received advice on Saturday from the Air Ministry that his son, Pilot Officer Ralph Owen Foster, had been killed in action. Pilot Officer Foster had been posted missing on the night of November 8 during air operations over Germany. He received his education at the Kaikoura District High School and the Christchurch Boys’ High School, alter which lie joined the ollice staff of the Vacuum Oil Company, being employed at the Christchurch and Timaru branches until his enlistment. He passed out of Wigram last May and left for England in June. He took a keen interest in rowing and was a member of the Canterbury and Timaru Rowing Clubs. Besides his parents. Pilot Officer Foster leaves a sister and two brothers. Pilot Officer Murray Foster, R.N.Z.A.F., Singapore, and Flight Lieutenant AthoJ M. Foster, R.A.F., England. CORPORAL H. E. GOODLAND The outstanding services given to the community as a pianist and community song leader by Corporal H. E. Goodland, who was killed recently in Libya while on active service, was mentioned at the meeting of the executive of the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association last evening. Particular reference was made to his help to the association during the depression years, when he travelled all over Canterbury giving his services to many charitable and other organisations. Corporal Goodland was a member of the head office staff of the Press Association at Wellington when he enlisted for service. Previously he was a member of the literary staff of the "Star-Sun.” His mother, Mrs R. Goodland. of 115 Hawke street. New Brighton. last week received advice of the death of another son, Sapper G. R.
