POINTS FROM OTHER LETTERS
"Time to Think" writes: "I notice on the two shilling stamp books between stamps blank sheets of paper. On these could be written postage of various countries and postage of different weights of parcels. Having such handy, useful information, might save much trouble to all." On racing and war news, "Not a Wowser Number Two" writes: "How true and thoughtful are the words of "Not a Wowser." Were there more people in New Zealand with the same feelings as your correspondent. New Zealand would be a better place to live in." "Help the Assistant" writes: "It is terrible the way the (grocer's) shop assistants are abused for not having what some of the customers ask for." The writer suggests that the Governmerrt should ask the people to help the shop assistants "instead of leaving every- , thing to the last minute." %,. r "Lillian Donnolley" suggests that Cabinet Ministers, instead of sharing their salaries with other members of Parliament, should surrender them to the- war savings scheme. On "Christmas Presents for Adults" "Broader View" writes: "I think (as a shopkeeper and a patriot) that your correspondent "H.L." is all wrong. If we don't sell the goods the war taxes will benefit by much less, as they tax on our total profits (and also receive the sales tax). Both wholesalers and retailers are having a lean enough time through shortage of goods without discouraging people from buying what lines we do get." "Old Digger" suggests that fuller inquiries should be made about war service appeals before appeals are upheld. "There are dozens of men working on farms who are more capable of running a farm than some of the boys of about 20 who are usually sons of the boss, and who have been put in charge of the farm as soon as they leave college. . . . Next we shall be sending married men overseas, while able-bodied, inexperienced farmers' sons play tennis and attend dances, parties, etc."
