RACING AND TROTTING

HORORATA R.C. GREY NIGHT AND MUFFLER WIN The Hororata Racing Club was favoured with fine weather for its annual race meeting an the Hororata racecourse on Saturday, and in spite of travelling restrictions the attendance was well up to that of recent years. The course was in fast order, and some keen racing was staged. Although only one favourite won during the afternoon, speculation was very satisfactory, the sum of £7492 10s being handled, against £8221 10s at last .year's meeting, a decrease of £729. The fixture will unfortunately show a loss, but the club pluckily decided to carry on in (lie face of the many difficulties which cropped up after nominations were taken and thus kept faith with owners, trainers, and riders, as well as with the residents of the district. NOTES ON THE RACING In Front Throughout Justilia was the only withdrawal from the Trial Plate, and the Alert —Thoraide bracket was sent out a staunch first choice Donrov, second favourite, went to the front at the start and was never in danger of being overhauled. He was followed into the straight by Miss Jessica and Desert Love together with Alert next, Donroy carried on for a decisive win from Miss Jessica, who oustayed Desert Love. Alert was three lengths away in front of Patsy Malone, Courage, and Vivid. A Stable Double The Bangor High-weight Hack Handicap resulted in another all the way win by On Call, a stablomate af Donroy. He was followed into tire straight by Patria, Roman Son, and Big Joe in line, in front of Rue and Gay Thread. Both Rue and Patria challenged, but neither had any chance, and On Call won easily from Rue, while Patria bent Big Joe by a head for third money. Gay Thread and Anchusa were next. Glendorc Trot Investors showed right judgment in sorting out All Serene and Chuckles as the best of the field for the Glendorc Trot, as they finished first and second, while Hie third choice. Liqueur was second into tile straight, but broke up under pressure. Quite Good dislodged his driver shortly after the start, and interfered with several of the runners. Chuckles soon drew to the front and endeavoured to lead throughout, but AH Serene, who was in third place turning into the straight, gradually wore her down in tiro run home, and beat her easily. There was then a big gap to Smirke. who was in front of Robinette, Straight, and Warline, Muffler’s Win Lunaria was sent out favourite for the iforerata Had; BaatUcaa* and although.

finishing on solidly after losing ground at flic turns, he suffered a nnrrow defeat by Muffler, who went to the front early from Lunaria and Dinah Dim. Lunaria was joined hv Dinaii Dim with half the journev covered and the pair led into the straight from Lunaria, Halt, and Shanghai Lilv. Lunaria made a late effort to Ret to 'Muffler, but the latter was able to hold on for a neck verdict. Dinah Dhu was a Rood third, a length in front of Shanghai Lily, with Halt, Exult, Parchment, and Benevolent following. First Success Miss Saone was the best supported in the Novice Stakes; but failed to be dangerous at any stage. Richelieu Pearl, Chop Suev, Hußhsotis. and Warfield went out wide at the rise of the barrier, and all lost ground. College Girl quickly took up the role of pacemaker and led throughout. She was followed into the straight by Chop Suey, Miss Saone. and Warfield. with Richelieu Pearl moving up. The last-named put in a telling run and onlv failed to got to College Girl by half a length. The result would probably have been different with a little further to go. Chop Suey, who did well after losing a lot of ground early, was a close third, beating the fast-finishing Hußhsotis by a head. Warfield and Miss Saone were next. A Narrow Margin The open event, the H. A. Knight Memorial Handicap, provided an interesting race and a close finish. Craißlea, Stabilise. Grev Night, and Synthetic disputed early leadership Synthetic was momentarily in front at the end of three furlong's, but Grey Nißht then drew out to lead into the straight from Synthetic, Stabilise. Craißlea, and Cherokee in close order. Cherokee was the only one of these to carry on and she finished very fast to only miss getting up to Grey Night bv the narrowest of margins. Craißlea, a stablemate of Cherokee, was a fair third, two lengths in front of Circular Note, with Stabilise* Synthetic, and Cymric following. Field Outclassed Integrity was confidently supported to win the Snowdon Trot, but whipped .round when the field was dispatched and lost considerable ground. Cold Steel rushed to the front early and soon opened up a gap of over 10 lengths, which he maintained for a circuit. In the meantime, Integrity made up a lot of leeway, and he and Liquer were within two lengths of Cold Steel with half a mile to go Cold Steel, however, went away again when called upon and entering the straight with over six lengths to spare went on to win by more than that margin. Liquer was in second place inside the final furlong, but broke, and rity gained second money from Smirke, who finished on to head off Liquer. Warline, Chuckles, and All Serene followed. Biff Joe Surprises Investors suffered a severe blow when the short-priced Maggiore failed to win the Sandown Hack Handicap. She was on the outside of Prince Dolomite turning for home, but was pushed out to the middle of the course by the latter, and in the meantime. Big Joe, hanging to the fence, gained a useful lead. Maggiore made a game effort when straightened up again, but Big Joe comfortably held on to his advantage. Prince Dolomite was a fair third, a length in front of Rebel Lady, who was also carried out at the straight entrance. Donroy and Lone Bird followed. WANT-ADS. TROTTING NOTES A Promising Pacer All Serene, winner of the Glendorc Handicap at Hororata on Saturday, is a four-year-old bay gelding by Wrack from a Rey de Oro mare, and had shown a glimpse of form in the Army Handicap on the opening day of the Forbury Park meeting. Starting from a 3min 43sec mark, All Serene finished fourth behind Premier Royal, Loyal Jack, and Follow Me. The winner recorded 3min 18 2-ssec. and as All Serene was only four lengths away his time was about 3min 20sec. Trained and driven by W. K. Tatterson. All Serene's form was good enough to suggest that he will win more races before the holiday meetings are finished. An Improver Cold Steel is a four-year-old gelding by Roy de Oro from a marc by Author Dillon, and he has done very little racing. his only start this season previous to his success on Saturday being in the Melrose Trot Handicap at the recent meeting held by the Ashburton County Racing Club. Cold Steel, who was well supported, was in the firing line until the last quarter of a mile, where he faded. Ashburton Trotting Club Tho military authorities have taken over the Ashburton racecourse, and the Ashburton Trotting Club has made application to the Minister for Internal Affairs for permission to hold its Boxing Day meeting elsewhere. A Juvenile In Chuckles R. Townley has a promising young pacer that should win races when more experienced. In her second to All Serene on Saturday she showed speed and stamina. Only three years old. Chuckles is by Quite Sure from Merry Rose, a half-sister to a good performer in Marie Celeste. Chuckles was bred by the Ashburton sportsman. Mr M. Rooney, and is held on lease by Townley. Forbury Park Trotting Club The stipendiary stewards’ report on the recent meeting held at Forbury Park includes the following: “What Is known as the Forbury system of betting was operated at tho meeting and proved most unpopular with all sections of the racing community. The totalisator for the meeting was operated by the New Zealand Electric Totalisators, Ltd., of Wellington, and here again there was much cause for dissatisfaction. On the first day no official times were, taken during the running of the Ning George Handicap. This was due to the fact that the judge (Mr J. Stevens) was not in the judge's box when the race started, and the timekeepers went in search of him. He was, of course, in the box for the finish of the race.” The judge had explained that his watch had stopped on the first day, and that was the reason why he was not in the box when the race referred to started. It was decided to ask the Now Zealand Electic Totalisators. Ltd., for an explanation of the working of the totalisator regarding some of the features that the committee considered unsatisfactory. If was decided to revert to the win and place system of betting. Bier Nominations Forty-two nominations have been received for the Trial Handicap at the Gore Trotting Club’s meeting. This position has been provided for in recent years, the card comprising only seven races, so that divisions can be treated as separate events and the machine operated on each. A Substantial Loss The recent meeting held at Forbury Pari: resulted in a loss of £B3O 15s. We* weather on the first day and a postponement accounted for a big drop in receipts.
