MEMORIAL SERVICES HELD
MAJOR A. N. GRIGG, M.P
A memorial service for Major A. N. Grigg M.P., was held at St. Stephens Anglican Church. Ashburton, last evening, and was attended by a large congregation, including Mr S. G. Holland. Leader of the Opposition, Mr T. H. McComos, M.P., representing the Government, and Mr T- N. Gibbs, deputy-chairman of the Christchurch branch of the National Party. The Mayor of Ashburton (Mr J. Connor) and the chairman of the Ashburton County Council (Mr S. P. Taylor) were a *About 70 members of the Ashburton branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, of which Major Grigg was the first member to be killed in action in this war, with Mr J. H. Grigg, patron of the branch and brother of Major Grigg, Mr W. G. Welsh, president. Mr H. C. Page, vice-president and Mr E. J. Daniel, secretary, paraded at the church. , , . , .. The service was conducted by tne Rev C L. Mountfort, who spoke on the life work of Major Grigg. He was assisted by the Rev. W. Harding. A tribute from Archbishop West-Watson was read by Dean A. K. Warren. A similar service was held yesterday morning by the Rev. H. G. Norris at St Aldan’s Church. Mount Somers, of y hich Major Grigg was a warden. It was attended by Messrs Holland and McCombs. The Rev. J. S, Murray made reference to the work of Major Grigg at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church last evening.
