APPEALS AGAINST SERVICE
BOARD CONCLUDES SITTING AT RANGIpRA
Twenty appeals, most of them .concerning farmers or farm workers, were heard in Ranglora yesterday, when the Armed Forces Appeal Board concluded a two day sitting. Mr F. F. Held. S.M., pre sided, and with him, were Messrs A. H. McKane and G. M.- Hall. Mr W. F; Tracy represented the Crown. Appealing on grounds of public interest and conscientious objection, Stanley Edward Rosslter, a sawmiller, said that he was a member of the Salvation Army. He objected to killing, but was prepared to serve In a non-combatant capacity. The appeal was dismissed, the appellant not to be called up before January X. Maurice O’Connell, a farm worker, appealed on grounds of undue hardship flnu conscientious objection, He said that had tried to join the Navy as a stoker. The. appeal was dismissed, reservist not to be called up before March 1. Replacing Workers
“I realise the importance of keeping up production, but it is obvious that in many cases the proper efforts are not made bv employers to get In contact with men with no military obligations to take the place of those required to serve the country overseas,” said Mr Hall, when R Peach appealed for Frederick George Hibbard, farm labourer, on grounds of public Interest and undue hardship. Giving the board’s decision that the ap-. peal would be adjourned sine die, to be reviewed in the March-Aprll period, the chairman said that the board was not satisfied with the efforts that had been made by the employer to secure a man to take the reservist’s place, The following appeals, made on grounds of public interest and undue hardship, were adjourned sine die: —James Christopher Croft, farm hand (appeal by J. C. Croft, employer), reservist to be transferred to the territorial forces; Leo Charles Croft, farm hand (appeal by J. C. Croft, employer), reservist to be transferred to the territorial forces; Ernest John Henry Bradshaw, farmer, reservist to be transferred to the territorial forces; Clarence William Hill, bee farmer (appeal by Miss M. A. Shepherd, partner): Henry Arrow Binns, farmer (co-appel-lant, R. W. Binns, employer): Alan William Matthews, farm hand (appeal by W. Matthews, employer), appeal to be reviewed in March; Ernest John Frederlcx Gartery, farmer, appellant to be transferred to the territorial forces; George Samuel Harris, farmer; James Haydon Rhodes, farmer. , Chemist’s Apprentice
An appeal by the Director of National Service for Joseph David Shier, chemist s apprentice, • on the ground of public interest, tvas adjourned sine die. Subject to the reservists not being called up before April 1, the following appeals on grounds of public interest and undue hardship were dismissed:—Thomas McCarthy farmer; Allan Lloyd Smith, mill employee (appeal by G; W, Jackson, employer), Lancelot Charles Threlkeld. farmer, appealed on the ground of public Interest for a postponement of service. The board's decision was that the • reservist should not be called up before April L The appeal by John Bernard Schaffer, farmer, on the ground of public interest, was adjourned sine die. _ An appeal by Jack Heineman Petrie, farmer, on. grounds of public interest and undue hardship, was dismissed, reservist not to be called up before March 1. W. C. V. Burrows appealed for a postponement of service for Hugh Alexander Campbell, farm hand. The grounds were public interest and undue hardship. The appeal was dismissed, subject to reservist not being called up before January 1. P. J. Pulley appealed for Percy Euan Pulley on grounds of public interest and undue hardship. Decision was reserved. The appeal madfe when the board sat at Culverden on Monday by H. H, Bfooker for Richard Noel George Brooker, on the ground of public Interest, was adjourned sine die, '
