DIFFICULTIES IN EXPORTING
LETTER FROM BRITISH FIRM An illustration of the difficulties certain United Kingdom manufacturers face in endeavouring to maintain exports to New Zealand is given by an English firm, the High Peak Manufacturing Company, Ltd., in a letter received by a Christchurch importing firm. •‘The obstructions which are put in our way and which vary from day to day-are so confusing as to make it impossible to take any decision in the matter qf export trade,” the letter states. “Not only have we to run the risk of the consignment being lost in transit, but even if it should escape the dangers of the sea, it is more than probable that it will be rejected by the New Zealand authorities. Our own people will not allow us to do anything at all in the matter of Dommetle, and as you tell us that wadding is restricted 100 per cent, on your side, we seem to be pretty hopelessly placed there as well. “We can only wait until the situation becomes a good deal clearer and depend upon you to let us know how things go on. For the present, therefore. we are doing nothing at all in the matter of outstanding orders for New Zealand. This is very regrettable, particularly as plenty of your customers seem to be requiring the goods, but we cannot kick against the fiscal policy of our respective Governments.”
