SHORTAGE OF PETROL
Sir,—Vehicles using other than petrol fuel would not, of course, come under the restrictions, but 1 saw three different horse floats in various places last week, one of which sometimes travels ; to Lyttelton; and there is a good train service to that place. The comment at the foot of my last letter may ■ or may not be reasonable, but comment on the wasteful, useless, and practically empty bus observation tours was . conspicuous by its absence. I heard yesterday about the use of petrol for a certain thing which is so outrageous that I will waif till later, when I have got over the shock of it, before writing about it.—Yours, etc., TROT. August 19, 1941. .
Sir,—We.hear a lot about petrol restrictions, and how we. should saye patrpl. Private owners .and business films have recently had another cut in their petrol allowance. We also read Tetters-.'in the -various papers criticising the railways for running their buses. parallel to the railways; but What we don’t hear abdutia'nWHChroprietors J running their bus® B ' to- country dances—Okain’s Bay, Little River, etc. Buses are being run to a dance at Little River in .a week or so. As there are plenty of dances here in Christchurch is not running buses to country darites a drastic waste of petrol? Are there no restrictions on the quantify of petrol for buses? Surely it is.time the. powers ,woke up and checked up . on bus consumption of petrol. Private owners. and business firms have to :pay .for registration of their -cars and have their petrol allowance severely cut, yet there appears to be.no restriction on petrol for buses.— Youm etc.,- . ■i.
