THE BURMA ROAD
AMERICAN ESTIMATE OF CAPACITY
JAPANESE BOMBING HAS LITTLE EFFECT
(Received August 19, 9.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, August 19.
The Chunking correspondent of the “New York Times” says the potential capacity of the Burma road is far in excess of the usual estimates of 30,000 tons a month, according to Mr Daniel Arnstein, an American truck operator, who has completed a survey of the road for the United States Government. Mr Arnstein declared that it was a good road and that its capacity was practically unlimited. Asphalting was now beginning and was expected to be well advanced by the end of the year. He said it was expected that 7000 American trucks would operate on the road shortly. Mr Arnstein added that the Chinese chauffeurs were good drivers. Japanese bombing had not appreciably affected traffic on the road. Vital bridges were still in use.
RIOM TRIAL FOR WAR GUILT
POWERS ASSUMED BY PETAIN
LONDON, August 18.
The refusal of the judges in the Riom war guilt trial to indict the Frejich statesmen and generals who were arrested last year is the reason for the decision by Marshal Petain to punish them himself without trial. The Paris correspondent of the ‘‘Daily Herald’’ states that Herr Hitler is insisting on super-sentences which he can exploit as his own exoneration of responsibility for the war. The correspondent adds that this inside story is surely one of the most scandalous Fascist measures which Marshal Petain has announced.
