AVONSIDE’S FIRST DEFEAT IN WINTER COMPETITION
Avonside suffered its first defeat In the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s winter inter-club competition on Saturday when it went down to Addington. It •was a close and exciting match, in which Addington won by a single set, rubbers being evenly divided. Addington now nominally leads the competition-with six points to Avonslde’s five, but Addington has played one more match than its rival. Each has been beaten once. Woolston and Elmwood A come next with three losses each. Results were as follows: Addington v. Avonside " Singles.—J. K. Burtt lost to V. W. Hammond, 5-7, 3-6; A. D. Smith beat A. Oazzard. 7-5, fi-2; H.~R. Fuller beat W. Thom, 6-4, 63; J. B. Corbett lost to L. Jackson, 0-8, 6-4, 2-6. ■ Doubles.—Burtt and Smith lost to Hammond and Gazzard, 5-7, 4-6; Fuller and Corbett beat Jackson and Thom. 6-2, 6-1. Addington won by 7 sets to 8. Elmwood A v. Canterbury College
