STREET PAVING
Sirlt would appear to me that the authorities' responsible for the maintenance of our city streets are likely to be the cause of many accidents through the paving of streets with bitumen coating and then large gravel. This is causing cyclists to ride out in the middle of the road or, as I have seen in many cases, on the footpaths; and if, as quite often occurs, especially with children, they have a fall off their cycles; the rough gravel surface causes much more serious damage to the person cqpcerned than a smooth-surfaced road. Further, at the present time especially, we have every need to conserve the wear and tear on all vehicles, including ' cycles and motor-cars. The type of surface at present being laid is responsible for very heavy wear on the tyres of 'the aforementioned vehicles • and for the benefit of our engineers, I might mention that tyres both for cars and cycles are almost impossible to. obtain.—Yours, etc., CYCLIST AND MOTORIST. May 5, 1941. lThfr- ; feity Engineer, Mr E. Somers, to whom" this letter was referred, said he had no comment to make.]
