NEW YEAR TOURNEY AT TIMARU

BROWN AND MISS POOLE WIN SINGLES TITLES [From Our Own Reporter.! TIMARU, January 5. Bright, sparkling tennis was seen by a large crowd yesterday, when the finals of the South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s New Year tournament were played. -The standard of play reached Its peak in the men’s championship doubles between Angas and Pattinson and Brown and Renton. Several baseline duels between Brown' and Pattinson will be remembered in Timaru for many seasons. Angas and Pattinson proved the better combination, winning the match 8-6, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4. A. D. Brown was too accurate for Angas in the singles, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 8-6, 6-2. In the women’s championship events, Miss T. Poole and Mrs Hatherley fought out the singles, the former winning easily, 6-1, 6-2. These two were partners in the doubles, winning from Misses J, Senior and K. Armstrong, 6-1, 7-5. The visiting players took all the honours, W. R. Renton being the only Timaru player to reach a final in the championship events. Rendall, of Timaru. had to beat a former Timaru player, J. Donnithorne, for the boys’ singles title. Donnithorne and Miss Elsom combined to take the handicap mixed doubles. Results:— Championships Men's Singles—Final: A. D. Brown beat C. Angas, 6-4, 8-6, 6-2. Men’s Doubles—Final: Angas and Pattinson beat Brown and Renton, 8-6, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4. Women's Singles—Final: Miss T. Poole beat Mrs Hatherley, 6-1, 6-2. Women’s Doubles—Final: Miss T. Poole and Mrs Hatherley beat Misses J. Senior and K. Armstrong. 6-1, 7-5. Girls’ Singles—Semi-final; Miss D. Elsom beat Miss A. Mercer, 9-2; Miss M. Adam beat Miss M. Brock, 9-8, Final: Miss D. Elsom beat Miss M. Adam, 6-3, 6-1. Mixed Doubles—Final; Brown and Miss Armstrong beat Angas and Miss Poole, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Handicap Events Men’s Singles—Semi-final: M. J. Souter beat I, Kelland, 6-0, 6-5; H. C. Cullen beat R. J. Barton, 6-3, 6-2. Final: M. J. Souter beat H. C. Cullen, 6-3, 6-2. Women’s Singles—Semi-finals: Miss Mercer beat Miss J. Ford, 9-5; Miss R. Thomas beat Miss Brock, 9-6. Final: Miss Mercer beat Miss Thomas, 9-7. Men’s Doubles—Semi-finals: Reynolds and Gresham beat Scott and Manchester, 6-0, 6-1; R. and J. Roberts beat G. Nicol and K. W. Stewart, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. Final: Reynolds and Gresham beat R, and J. Roberts, 6-5, 6-3. Mixed Doubles—Semi-finals: Urquhart and Miss I. McFarlane beat Blair and Miss Brock, 9-3; J. Donnithorhe and Miss D. Elsom beat J. Roberts and Miss R. 'Campbell, 9-8. Final: Donnithorhe and Miss Elsom beat Urquhart and Miss McFarlane, 9-4.
