NOTES ON THE RACING [THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, November 2. Short Wave Win* After waiting on the leader, Patti Nellon. until the field was entering upon toe last half-mile, Short Wave soon placed toe Issue beyond doubt in the Petone Handicap, and won stylishly at the end. He. was the only horse to trot solidly from start to finish, and fully deserved the victory. Hamel Bey was never further back than third at. any stage, and his performance was of his best. Elite Hey made a couple of early breaks and did well to be third, while Patti Nelson looked like being In the money when she woke in the straight. None of the others looked like being In the money.

Borough Handicap Ben Travis was responsible for a sound Performance when he came with a resolute run over the final furlong to win toe Borough Handicap going away. Gold night looked all over a winner when he Was a couple of lengths clear at the distance, but failed to withstand the winner's challenge. However, he should not he long in breaking his maiden status, Brat Call had every chance, being never further back than third, and after the placed horses came Prince McElwyn and Solicitor. Falalse struck interference at the start and finished with a buckled Wheel.

Always a Winner Single Star made no race of the Borough Handicap, going to the lead at the *pd of a furlong and being always about “X lengths clear of a bunched field. As • matter of fact he was not extended at •by stage, and an illustration of how good Me: Is was furnished by the fact that we just “toddled” 4mln 28sec. Neutrality Was a good way back at one stage, but really had every chance. William Potts Oajhe home fairly well, and best of the others were Titus and Blue Diamond. ,

A Dead-Heat .Three Tens made a great effort to lead ® the way in the Royal Handicap, and « was only in the last few strides that Jjappy Locanda got up In time to divide ■he honours. Happy Locanda should have *«n. for he received a far from smooth Passage throughout, and , was definitely “Plucky. Kilrea would also have been 'loser but tor being badly pocketed for Over a mile and a quarter, and it was July in the last furlong that she got «e»r enough to lodge her claim. Stormg*t was badly placed from the start, but worthy Need petered out. Zlncall looked jutely at the turn, and was a fair fourth. out, tta oVners were never vienfc«to\iv

President’s Handicap . Oanzle Guy and Expensive Lady set out 5 make the pace In the President s HanSWP,.but at the home turn Elite Key. Sfmel Bey. and Patti Nelson Joined lng«nel 6ey looked likely at the distance. lS broke under pressure, and this en“W. Elite Rey to gain a definite adJWUge. None of the others over looked We being in the money. iv= i- An Easy Success , Slight was never further back than JP-ond at any stage of the Novice HanSWp, and when he ran to the front iJJWfng the two-furlong post he quickly ?Wbllshed a winning advantage, which fWwid to the end, Falaiso trailed the fJWfc for the first mile and ran oir fairly,

well for third. Prince McElwyn was a useful third, but two well-backed fancies in Solicitor and First Call ruined their chances by breaking early. A creditable Performance

Kid Wolf would have been very unlucky to have lost the Suburban Handicap, for he was badly placed throughout the first mile, and it was not until the final furlong that his driver could bring him to the outside. He finished with a rare burst of speed and was going away at the end. Blue Diamond ran a great race after being up among the leaders all the way* Single Star was a good way back with a round to go, but had moved up fast to be second at the turn, but the effort to get within striking distance left her without a finishing run. Neutrality would certainly have been In the money but for getting stopped in the straight, but Titus. Mackscot, and Don Walla weakened. ■ _ . Kilrea Returns

Although she did not begin too well, once Kilrea settled down to pace she auickly reached the front in the Electric Handicap, and although challenges were thrown out In the straight she proved too good for the opposition and won unextended. Zlncall was forced over a lot of extra ground to be up handy at the turn, and finished on very solidiy. Bayard made a forward move at the half-mile, and his was a good effort. Happy Locanda ent nil the worst of the running, and did well to be fourth, ahead of Worthy Need Stormiest, and Nell Grattan.
