ADULT EDUCATION
WIDE ACTIVITIES IN PAST YEAR A very wide range of activities was undertaken by the Canterbury district council of the Workers’ Educational Association in the last year. The annual report, presented to a recent meeting of the council by the secretary (Mr G. Manning) showed that 20 tutorial classes were formed in the year, and these were attended by 622 students. Thirteen were in . Christchurch and New Brighton, two in North Canterbury, one in Mid-Canter-bury, and four in South Canterbury. Two staff tutors were employed in the country areas for the organisation of classes under the box schemes, and discussion courses, jf which there were 40, with a roll of 461 students. An encouraging feature was the number of classes formed on the West Coast, where tutorial classes are not available.
Figures for the classes indicate that subjects dealing with social, economic and political questions have the main appeal for adult students, although the cultural subjects such as drama, music, art and literature were greatly appreciated, states the report. One of the main activities of the council was the organisation of the summer school at Waitaki, where the students undertook the study of two important subjects. New Zealand in the making and international affairs. Public lectures, social evenings, a series of prison lectures, field days, the annual visit to Mount Cook, and the annual Ensom course of lectures on international problems are other activities of the council reviewed in the report. The council decide ’, that the summer school this year should be held in the Waimate primary and secondary schools, during; the school. holidays..
