LAWN TENNIS

♦ COMPETITIONS OPEN PLAY IN MIXED GRADES The mixed grade competitions of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association opened in perfect weather at Wilding Park on Saturday. Hard courts only were used, but later the higher grades will be transferred to the grass courts. Entries have been seriously affected by the war, but good competitions are assured and the first matches on Saturday produced some keen games. The association, too. is making a special effort to secure a good entry for the men’s senior competitions, which will include several teams from the fighting services, and which will plav an important part in providing the soldiers and airmen with recreation and organised competition play. These competitions, which will be held fortnightly, will begin on November 16. Ranking matches will be held on the alternate weeks, and it is probable that the men’s ranking list this year will be strengthened considerably by players from other centres who arc now at Canterbury Air Force stations or camps.
