CRICKET

♦ W. A. HADLEE’S THIRD CENTURY DAY OF OUTSTANDING

PERFORMANCES Advocates of one-day cricket had everything in their favour on Saturday, when the third round of matches in the Canterbury Cricket Association’s competition was played. Seldom, if ever before, has such a thrilling afternoon’s play been provided. At no stage of the day was play dull, and in almost every case the result of the game was in doubt till the last 10 minutes of play. An outstanding achievement was that of W. A. Hadlee, the Canterbury and New Zealand representative batsman, who made his third successive century for Old Boys in club matches, this time against Sydenham. His 108 was a brilliant exhibition occupying as many minutes and Including 11 fours and three sixes. In previous rounds he alone made a century, but on Saturday no fewer than five other batsmen reached that mark, and another missed by only three runs—a most unusual achievement. Another outstanding performance was the scoring of 594 runs in four hours and a half by West Old Boys and St. Albans. This rate equals 132 an hour, and there was always plenty of action in the game. Those who scored centuries besides Hadlee were D. Moynlhan (West Old Boys) 117. W. M. Strachan (Rlccarton) 106, K. Young (Harewood) 104, K. F. M. Uttley (West Christchurch) 104, and A. Burgess (Sydenham) 103 not out. Results of matches played on Saturday are as follows;

Old Boys 223 for five wickets (declared) drew with Sydenham 167 for six wickets.

West Christchurch 233 for six wickets beat Harewood 222 for seven wickets (declared) by 11 runs on the first Innings. St. Albans 310 for seven wickets beat West Old Boys 284 for seven wickets (declared) by 26 runs on the first innings. East Christchurch 177 for nine wickets (declared) beat Lancaster Park 150 by 27 runs on the first innings.

Rlccarton 257 for five wickets (declared) beat Wigram 135 by 122 runs on the first Innings.

Army 232 for two wickets (declared) drew with Old Collegians 148 for eight wickets.

Apart from Hadlee few Old Boys batsmen made many runs against a fairly consistent Sydenham attack, I. A. Baxter’s 34 being the best. S. Cameron, who took three wickets for 51 runs, was the most successful bowler for Sydenham, which, after a bad start, managed to draw, thanks to the good innings of Burgess. A. Allen (75), along with Young, helped Harewood to show greatly Improved form with the bat against West Christchurch, which, however, maintained an unbeaten record chiefly through Uttley and J. Nee (70). Neither side was strong in bowling, J. Rabone (Harewood), with four wickats for 68 runs, having most success.

The bowlers had a bad time in the West Old Boys-St. Albans match. Apart from Moynlhan. F. Hobbs, with 59, batted well for West Old Boys, as did F. W. Walter

(97), W. C. Dailey (89), and M. Cummings (56) for St. Albans. B. Sinclair (West Old Boys), with four for 66 runs, took most wickets In the match. j In the poorest scoring game of the day East Christchurch gave Lancaster Park Its first defeat. J. Wason (East Christchurch), with 46, and D. Stout (Lancaster Park) 43, were the highest scorers for their respective sides. R. Westwood took three wickets for 25 for Lancaster Park, but H. Davis (East Christchurch), to. his first game this season, had the day’s best bag of seven for 61. Bright batting by Strachan and G. A. Bull (53) allowed Rlccarton to declare early against Wigram, whose display was disappointing, and for whom L. W. Smith’s 32 was the best effort against the bowling of A. W. Roberts (four for 21) and Bull (three for 28). The Army batsmen found the Old Collegians’ bowling to their liking, and thanks to A. S. Cutler (76), A. P. Monteath (70 not out), and R. Pinney (56). showed that their previous form was all wrong. The side had, however, to be content with a draw. C. V. Walter (50) was the most successful batsman for Old Collegians, while A. E. Cresswell’s five for 34 represented good bowling for Army. Positions of Teams • The following table shows the positions of the teams:—
