AIRMEN KILLED IN ATAAHUA CRASH

Airman Pilot Leading Aircraftsman H. J. von Tunzelmann, who was killed on Monday when a Royal New Zealand Air Force machine crashed near Big Bay, Ataahua, was a son of Mr and Mrs J. H. von Tunzelmann, Thames street, Invercargill. He was educated at the Waihopai .School and at the Southland Technical College, where he was a non-commissioned officer in the school cadets. He later attended the Dunedin Training _ College and was a school teacher in Invercargill when he joined the Air Force. Airman Pilot von Tunzelmann was a good swimmer. He was a member of the Signal Corps of the Territorials in 1935 and 1936. He was an enthusiastic hiker, and about three years ago he left Dunedin and "hitch-hiked” to Motueka, the journey taking him only two and a half days. He was always keen on flying and had many flying hours to his credit. Airman Pilot von Tunzelmann went to Levin last year to begin training. He was to have gone home to Invercargill in about a fortnight’s time on leave. Another victim of the crash, Airman Pilot Leading Aircraftsman A. J. Hull, was a son of Mr and Mrs H. J. Hull, of Napier. He was educated at the Napier Boys’ High School and the Waitaki Boys’ High School. He then went to Canterbury University College, where he took a science course. He was a member of College House. He corppleted his M.Sc. degree at Victoria University College, and was capped at Canterbury University College this year. He was attached to the research staff of the Shell Oil Company, Ltd., when he joined the Air Force, in which he was recommended for a commission. He was always a keen sportsman and was specially interested in rowing.
