MAGISTRATE’S COURT

♦ TUESDAY. (Before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS William John Carr, aged 36, was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment for drunkenness. He had been convicted of the same offence the day before. THEFT OF FOOD Allan Edward Power, aged 25. was convicted of stealing food worth 2s, the property of Emma Adeline Felton. Senior-Sergeant J. Bickerdike said that Power had gone into a house where he had recently been doing some gardening and taken biscuits. The accused was ordered to come up for sentence if called on within six months. OBSCENE EXPOSURE Cumulative sentences, each of 12 months’ imprisonment with hard labour, were imposed on William Henry Culverhouse Webber (Mr J. A. Kennedy) on charges of obscene exposure on January 23 and April 23. Webber was convicted and discharged on a third charge of obscene exposure. Detective-Sergeant J. McClung said that Webber had been convicted in 1938 on 21 charges of a similar nature. The Magistrate said that his only course was to place the accused where he was no longer a possible danger to the community, and leave it to the authorities in the Prisons Department to examine him medically if necessary. TRAFFIC OFFENCES Traffic*offenders were convicted and fined (payment of costs being ordered) as follows where not stated otherwise:—Parking over time: Bernhard Charles Boulton, 20s; Alfred Storer Geddes, 20s: Richard Wilson Heaps, 20s; Mrs Hilda Younger, 10s. Failing to give way to right: Arthur G. Hembrow. 20s; John Watson, 20s. Failing to yield right of way: Arthur E. Stott, 10s (and for having no warrant of fitness, costs only). Driving without due care and attention: Harry Barker, 20s. Proceeding against automatic signal: Benedict Elias Bernstein, 20s. Insufficient lights: Edward Duckworth Brown, 10s. Driving without a licence: Arthur Duthie, costs only; Eric W. J. Millton, ss; George Lester Thomson, ss. Driving without tail-light: Maurice Shand. 5s (for having no licence, ss); Achison Alva Trotter, ss. Riding bicycles without light: David William Lawrenson, costs only; Melville Smith, costs only. Failing to signal when leaving kerb: Mrs Mary Ruth Minson. 10s. Exceeding heavy traffic speed limit: Frederick Elderton, £2. Failing to dip lights: John McCallum, 20s.

CIVIL COURT (Before Mr G. G. Chisholm, S.M.) PLAINTIFF NON-SUITED Plaintiff was non-suited in a civil claim which was the sequel to a Labour Department prosecution. Myrtle Agnes Stephenson, a waitress (Mr K. UArcher), claimed £3 Is 3d from Dorothy Md!y Robinson, tea-room propne" tress (Mr R. A. Young), alleging ttiai in November, 1939, she had worked a* a waitress and received £ 1 a week instead of £1 17s 6d, the award rate. - Mr Young submitted that the plaintiff’s previous employment had not carried her beyond the status of a probationer.
