PERSONAL PARCELS FOR SOLDIERS

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir. —In your correspondence! column a day or two ago, there appeared a letter from the pen of H. O. Hanby. of Amberlcy, on the question • of district patriotic committees send-1 ing parcels to the men who are serv- j ing overseas. I must say that I am 100 | per cent, with Canon Hanby on this 1 question. ! From experience of the 1914-18 - period, I know what joy' our district] men get from receiving the parcels! sent by the district committee. I may I mention that the committee to which | I was attached sent some thousands I of parcels, and I still hold hundreds of; letters and cards from the soldiers! telling of their appreciation to the local men and women. The method we adopted was to pack the goods in tin containers. With the goods, two cards were put in—one with some cheery word from either a man or a woman on the committee or any district resident. The other card was for the soldier to send back to the committee to say whether he had received the parcel. By this method we knew whether the right man received the parcel. Therefore I know that Canon Hanby is not exaggerating when he said 99 per cent, of the parcels reached the soldiers —thanks to the men of the seas and the Post Office. There is no doubt that the personal touch counts a lot with our boys overseas. It is to be hoped that Canon Hanby will receive the backing that this method of sending parcels deserves. —Yours, etc., W. J. ORMANDY. Leeston, July 19. 1940.
