GENERAL FRYBERG'S THANKS
ANXIOUS TO RETURN TO THE CITY In a letter dated from Sydney, on January 11, the General Officer Commanding the 2nd New Zealand Expedltiqnary Force, Major-General B. C. Freyberg, V.C., has thanked the Mayor pf Christchurch, Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P., and members of the Christchurch City Council, for the welcome given to him by the city. The letter also mentions the activities of the Mayor on behalf of the recruiting campaign in the city. Maipr-General Freyberg stcitcs* "Please forgive the lateness of this letter, I know that you will appreciate the difficulties under which I have been working during the last fortnight. Although they are no excuse, they make my late reply a little less bad than it would appear. Would you please convey to the city councillors and the people of Christchurch my deepest appreciation and sincere thanks for the charming welcome you gave to me on the morning of my visit. "I know that you have been working very hard recruiting in Christchurch, and I trust that your efforts will be crowned with success. I hope at some later date to return and have a look at the beauties of Christchurch, have a chance to see the gardens in the springtime, and have a look at the view from the Port Hills and from the Pilgrim's Way. As I said before, Christchurch reminds me more of the lovely old English towns than any other place I have been to,"
