The yield for the first nine months is nearly £IOO,OOO ahead of the amount received in the corresponding period last year, while sales tax receipts and motor spirit and tyre duties have also recorded substantial increases for the first three quarters of the current year. The customs yield is £365,736, compared with £274,987 for September last year, an advance of £90,749 and an Increase of £75,309 on the return for August this year. One of the principal reasons contributing to the improved revenue is the increased petrol tax, which for the purposes of the returns is calculated at the old rate of 6d a gallon, the balance being included in ordinary customs revenue. For nine months of the year sales tax receipts amount to £810,423, an increase of £54.731 compared with the same period in 1938. However, the £84,269 obtained in September was the lowest monthly aggregate since last February. Tyre duty for the month rose by £214. while the tax on motor spirit, calculated at 6d a netted £2246 less than in September. 1938. However, when compared over the nine months period all these figures show advances on the corresponding aggregates for the first three quarters of 1938. , . .. 0 The marked recovery shown in tne excise duty on beer in August was continued last month when receiptswere £2245 ahead of those for Septetnber, 1938. So far this year £154,092 has been obtained under this heading ns against £149,371 from January to September, inclusive, last year.
