CASHMERE GROUPS : The Cashmere sub-centre of the Red Cross Society is the first city sub-centre of the'society to form working groups. At a meeting held yesterday in the Masonic Hall, Christchurch, many new members joined the sub-centre. Miss M. G. Havelaar, who spoke of the work that had been accomplished during the last few weeks, congratulated members on the formation of their groups and on their voluntary aid detachment. Mrs H. Wales, president of the subcentre, and Mrs H. A. Young were appointed to supervise general duties; Mrs F. C. Thornton, the honorary secretary, will be in charge of cboking and catering; Mrs S. V. Massey,' honorary treasurer, will take charge of typing, and other appointments were: Sewing and knitting, Mrs J. A. Johnson; car driving. Miss K. Johnson, and care of children, Mrs M. Everest. STYX-HAREWOOD SUB-CENTRE FORMED ; About 60 women from the Harewood tand Styx districts gathered at the home ■of Mrs L. C. Sisson, Veitch’s road, Papanui, yesterday afternoon, to hear addresses given by Lady Wigram and Mrs Herbert Smith,, of the Christchurch centre of the Red Cross Society. Lady Wigram proposed the formation of a Styx-Harewood sub-centre, and this met with unanimous approval. Officers elected were;— President, Mrs W. F. McArthur; vice-presidents, Mrs A. D. McConnal; secretary-treasurer, Mrs F. R. Allan; assistant secretarytreasurer, Mrs R. K.. Merton; committee, Mesdarnes.C. H. Corey, D. H. Donaldson, L. C, Sisson, H. Bishop, W. R. Henderson, C. Winfield, and Miss Maisie Sisson, with power to add to their number. ", It was decided that meetings should be held on the second Tuesday of each month.. Miss Havelaar will be the speaker at the next meeting. At the conclusion of the meeting afternoon tea was served by Mrs Sisson, who was thanked for her hospitality.
SUB-CENTRE FORMED AT PAPANUI J
A public meeting was held in the rooms of the Returned Soldiers’ Association at Papanui to form a subcentre of the Red Cross Society. The Rev. E. A. Osmers presided over a large gatherings t Lady Wigram, chairwoman of the women’s executive, and Mrs Herbert Smith spoke of the work of the society.
The following officers were elected; President, Mrs A. Orchard; vice-presi-dent, Mrs Burrell; secretary-treasurer. Mr» J. A. Gregor. The next meeting will be held in the rooms of the Returned Soldiers’ Association on October 4 at 8 p.m;, when classes in home nursing will be- arranged. All interested in the work have -been invited to attend. 1 FEDERATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN Miss Jenny I. Stewart presided over the rqonthly meeting of. the Canterbury Federation of University Women. An address on Maori art was given by the acting-curator of the Canterbury Museum, Mr R. S. Duff, who was accorded a vote of thanks on the motion of Miss A. Innes. Lantern slides shown with the assistance of Mr P. Graham added interest to the evening’s programme.
