DEATH IN MOTOR ACCIDENT

EVIDENCE AT INQUEST

'An inquest into the death ,of Noel Frederick Trolove--from injuries xeceived in a motor accident .on the Christchurch-Akaroa :■ road i on July,; 8. was concluded yesterday-before Mr E. C. Lewey as Coroner, r Trolove, _who was d married : roan living in ; Wainoni road, had been the.driver of a threeseater car which collided, with a motor-truck just, after nightfall. After evidence had been given a verdict wa& returned, in terms of the medical testimony, that death was -due to injuries received ih the collision. ;Mr, D. W. Russell appeared for Trolove’s relatives, and Mr N. -S. Bowie for both the driver of the . truck and the insurance company concerned. Derek Royd Trolove, a: passenger in the car, said that approaching. a slight curve in - the road : the' driver appeared to be dazzled by the' oncoming .lights, of a vehicle, drhich he later-found tp be a truck. The car he was in dipped its lights, but the truck; did not,: and a collision took place. William Ernest Cottier, another passenger ih the car, also gave evidence on the same lines. William John Oakley Turner, a cartage contractor, aged - 25, of. Kaituna, said that in his opinion the; acci-: dent was caused by the car; which hqj saw 'a long way away, taking the bend too fast and; being unable to keep oh its; right side. He. had been' driving all the way with 'headlights dipped, because one of the ordinary, headlamp •bulbs was- burned out.':

To Mr Russell,.; witness detailed his movements ' before the accident., He had been to a football match at Lincoln in the afternoon,, had a business talk ' after; it, arid had two ’ bottled shandies in the hotel. He had taken as a passenger in the -truck Aihert Manson, one- of the' football players. ■ After the evidence had been called Mr Russell expressed surprise that the passenger in the. truck had not been called as a witness.-
