REBATE OF RACING CLUBS' TAXES

REPORTED DECISION OP GOVERNMENT (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.! WELLINGTON, August 22. Although official confirmation is lacking, it is understood on reliable authority that the Government intends this year to withhold the customary rebate of 1 per cent, on the tax'payable by racing clubs. This decision has been reached as a result of the increase in the totalisatof turnover. In the last few years clauses have been included in Finance Acts permitting clubs to retain one-fifth of’the amount payable by way of totalisator tax. This action has been taken by the Government on application being made by the clubs through their national organisation, but this year’s application has been rejected.
