VISIT BY ENGLISH TEAM IN 1940 NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL MEETS / ' (THE PRESS Special Service.l INVERCARGILL, August 22. The English Basketball Council will not be able to send a representative basketball team to New Zealand for the 1940 tournament in Wellington, but it is the hope of the council that a team of English visitors will be able to take partr iq the fixture. This was announced by the president of the New Zealand Basketball Association (Mrs H. D. Muir), at a meeting of the council in Invercargill to-night. “A representative team from Australia will visit the Dominion to take part in the tournament, and it seems probable that the New Zealand and Australian teams will have an opportunity of Playing against an English side, although the team will not be a representative one. Mrs Muir continued. A decision was made to provide a section for secondary school teams at the 1940 tournament, with a stipulation the entries number at least five. A matter was raised by the president, who said she had ben assured by the headmistress of one secondary school that if this section were provided, support would be forthcoming from secondary schools. Young school players would see the best exponents of the game in action, and as the outcome their own play would probably improve. There would also be an increase in the popularity of basketball in secondary schools. It was decided that the allocation of the 1941 tournament should be deferred until the 1940 meeting. A meeting of the New. Zealand Council is to be held in Wellington during the 1940 tournament, and members of the New Zealand Basketball Referees’ Association are to be invited to attend a combined meeting of the council and overseas officials to discuss the rules.

The following officers were elected:— P§tron. Lady Galway; president, Mrs H. D. Muir (re-elected): secretary-treasurer, Mrs R. M. Smith (re-elected): honorary solicitor, Mr C. H. Hain; honorary auditor, Mr W. R. Eggers. ■
