DRAINING OF LAKE FORSYTH

(0 THE EDITOR Of VBE FEES! Sir, —Some 60 years ago Lake, Forsyth was drained into the sea by men with teams of horses and scoops, making a channel between the lake and sea. This is an annual job, and sometimes has to be done twice and three times in one year. The channel was opened a few days ago at a cost of £l6O. Some months ago, after considerable agitation, the Wairewa County Council had a special bill passed in Parliament to allow it to borrow £SOOO, being the council's share of amount required for a permanent outlet. A special rating area has been defined and settled by a magistrate. The Minister for Public Works stated In Parliament that he would start the work as soon as the Wairewa County Council paid £SOOO into the Consolidated Fund. Why all the delay? Cannot the council borrow the money or is it waiting for Lake Ellesmere to b, drained?-—Youra. wmKLE August 20, 1939,
