COST OF ROPEWAY FOR FRANZ JOSEF
The monthly meeting of the Westland County Council was;.held, with the chairman (Mr J. A. Murdoch) presiding. The Minister in charge of the Tourist Department, in replying to the council, stated that the cost of a ropeway at the Franz Josef Gldcier .was high, and funds were riot available. The road to Chancellor ridge was being looked, into. " ' ' . The Ministerfor Public Works noticed a grant of £2OO, £ for £, for..the Kokapotahi river works, and a grant of £266, £2 for £l, for the Kokatahi river works. ’ 1 . . The Inspector of Police-wrote promising co-operation in the wandering stock nuisance on the southern roads, and suggested a public pound at Wataroa. The Westland Hospital. Board notified the council of the local body levies as follows:—Westland County, £4788 14s 9d; Hokitika borough, £2299 17s 4d; Ross borough, £l4s' 10s 6d; Kumara borough, £ll6 5s 4d. A letter was received Itotu ttve 'Ross Borough Council suggesting a meeting of local bodies at Hokitika to discuss the increasing hospital levy, now more than double in tvip years.■ The, suggestion was agreed to, the chairman and Crs. Dale and Jamieson being appointed to represent the council. The council decided to concur in :the plan of the proposed commemorative cairn at the divide on the Haa§t. Pass road, as suggested by the VincenJ County Council,’in appreciation of the Hon. R. Semple’s ; interest and, attention as Minister for PublicWorics to the work of linking Otago and Westland by a first-class road. • -
