FOURTH ANNUAL BALL
CHRISTCHURCH FISH RETAILERS The Winter Garden was crowded last night when the Christchurch Fish Retailers’ Association (Incorporated) held its fourth annual ball. Last year many intending patrons were unable to gain admission to the ball, so this year the committee limited the number of tickets to 500, all of which were quickly sold. Members of the organising committee were Messrs F. L. Knowles (president), W. G. Yates, T. Mason, W. C. Roberts, R. C. Searle, P. W. Sim, J. Wilson, A. M. Green, J. Craig, J. Sutton, L. W. "Broad, H. Gourlay, A. E. Menand, G. Snook, and T. E. Fisher (hon. secretary). Those invited as guests of honour were the Hon. D. G. Sullivan and Mrs Sullivan, the Mayor, Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P., and Mrs Macfarlane, the Town Clerk, Mr J. S. Neville and Mrs Neville, Mr and Mrs E. J. Newman, Mr F. P. Walsh and Mr A. Goslin. Music was jplayed by George Bradford’s orchestra and items were given by Miss Billie Addis (dancer) and Mr W. Jarvis (yodeller). Special dances were held and paper hats and many novelties were distributed amongst the guests. A feature of the ball was the second supper—supper de luxe—at which poultry, oysters, and crayfish were served at midnight. Among those present were Mesdames T. James. T. Martin, E. Menand, A. GOOD COMPANIONS
Miss, J. Horth presided at the monthly meeting of the Good Companions Club held last night at the home of Mrs H. -D. Christie, Fen’dalton. Miss L.' Jeffreys gave an interesting talk on Syria She described Damascus as ’ a white., city on a spoon-shaped oasis, where apricots, peaches. • and grapes grdw abundantly. . The cobblestones in" the streets were slippery from water-carriers, throwing water to ke’ep down the dust in summer. Syria, she explained, was' divided into four states, the people . were hospitable, well mannered, arid never flurried; ■education was mostly received at mission schools.
