•BOROUGH COUNCIL' Cr. G. S. Morris, Deputy-Mayor, pre-, sided at the meeting of the. Lyttelton Borough Council last night. Also present were Crs. G. Halliday, J. N. Neville, W. T. Lindsay, R. Mutton, J. D. Sargentina, R. Caims, and W. T. Foster.
The Royal New Zealand Sanitary. Institute wrote asking that the 'council send a representative to the annual conference of the institute, to be held at Wellington in January.
Cr. Foster moved that the borough inspector (Mr G. M. Daniel) represent the council. There was no seconder to the motion. Cr. Cairns said that it was a waste of money to send the inspector to Wellington. A full report was supplied to contributing bodies later. On the motion of Cr. Sargentina it was decided, that the council join the Royal New Zealand Sanitary Institute. An application was received from the Avon Cycling Club asking for the services of the berough inspector on the occasion of the club’s rpund-the-bays cycle race 09 September 2. The application was, granted. . ■ A grant of £2O was made to the Lyttelton Plpnket Society. The Borough Council last night decided to support a movement for recruiting in Lyttelton for a coastal defence battery. . „ , Captain J. L; Page, adjutant, 23rd Heavy Battery, New Zealand _ Artillery, wrote stating that authority for the formation of. a coast defence battery had been gazetted. A meeting at which it was hoped to form a recruiting committee and perhaps obtain some recruits, would be held in the Returned Soldiers’ Association rooms on Thursday next. The writer asked that the council be represented at the meeting. The Army Department considered it desirable that the Battery Point portion of the battery, at least, should be drawn from Lyttelton,
Cr. Morris: I am a great believer in this movement There are enough young fellows in Lyttelton to take on this work. Cr. Foster said that every councillor was favourable to the scheme. If a battery was to. be formed at the port, then they would all like it to be manned by Lyttelton men. Cr. Sargentina said the council should be represented at the meeting. , Cr. Neville moved that the council be represented at the meeting. The motion was seconded by Cr. Lindsay.
Something should be done to get the young men to realise their responsibility in the defence of their country, said Cr. Morris. It was all for their own good. Heavy gun drill was one of the finest drills in the world. The motion was carried. Golf
A competition held by the Diamond Harbour Ladies’ Golf Club during the week-end was won by Mrs B. J. Graham. Mrs Graham was also the winner of the Clow Cup and the Thomas Cleek. Personal A letter from Cr. and Mrs R. Penton, who are on holiday in England, was read at the meeting of the Borough Council last night The letter conveyed to the Town Clerk, Mr R. Sowden, congratulations on his appointment and also extended congratulations to the Mayor (Mr F. E. Sutton) on his election as chairman of the Harbour Boar 4» - .A ■
