WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

AKAROA ' The May meeting of the Akaroa Women’s Institute was held, with the president (Miss M. Jacobson) presiding. “A fault mender is better than a fault finder” was the motto for the day. The resignation of Miss I. Mahon, who has left to reside in Christchurch, was accepted with much regret. It was decided to forward her a letter of appreciation. , , Miss E. Jacobson agreed to act temporarily as the agent for “Home and Country” in the place of Miss Mahon. A letter was received from Mrs Wood about the women’s section at the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition, thanking the institute for the letter offering the loan of curios, and describing ideas for the section. The president said that the members of the committee were dealing with the matter. Money was collected for the pioneer women’s memorial at the intersection of the Bridle path and the Summit road It was decided to have another collection later. Mrs P. J. Peoples continued the Golden Thread talks with an account of the life and works of Mendelssohn, later playing two pianoforte solos depicting his work Mrs C. D Sealey sang a song from Mendelssohn. ‘ Mrs A. W. Aitchison gave an account of a week-end at OberAmmergau and the Passion Play. A demonstration on the making of loose covers was given by Miss M. E. DUVAUCHELLE Miss Mavis Hayward (president) presided at the May meeting of the Duvauchelle Women’s Institute held recently. , „ ... The Akaroa Centennial Committee wrote asking if two of its members could attend the annual birthday party to be held shortly, to speak about the centennial celebrations. An invitation to the Okain’s Bay Women’s Institute’s party on June 16 was received. The institute decided to give £1 Is from the proceeds of the money raised from teas at the recent dog trials to the Bridle path memorial to the pioneer women of Canterbury. The president, in making a presentation of a necklace to Mrs Giddens. who has resigned from the institute, spoke of her assistance to the institute, and expressed regret at her departure. Miss Hayward welcomed Mrs D. Dick (Lakeside), a former president of the institute, and Mrs Wilson, a visitor from Christchurch. Mrs P. J. Peoples gave a talk on the “Life and Works of Mendelssohn,” and played two piano solos, Mrs C. D. Sealey sang “On Wings of Song,” by Mendelssohn, Mrs Peoples accompanying her. Mrs P. G, Riches gave a demonstration of faggotting, showing sampels of her handwork. The competition resulted:—Silver beet. Mrs T. Le Compte 1; bloom, Miss Miriam Mould 1, Mrs G. Mould 2. The hostesses were Mesdamcs Geo. Mould, F. A. Lewthwaitc, Misses McIntosh, and Jessie Vogan. OKAIN’S BAY Mrs G. Waghorn. vice-president, presided at the May meeting of the Okains Bay Women’s Institute. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to Mrs T. G. Ware. Arrangements were made for the birthday party on June 16. The roll call was “My favourite department in a drapei s shop.” _ Miss M. Fogo. Association for Country Education, later gave a demonstration on loose cover making. Miss Fogo also judged the competition for a sultana cake, the results being:— Miss Nancv Moore 1, Mosdames Challies and J.‘ Harris (equal) 2, Mrs Waghorn 3, The hostesses were Mcsdames Lane, H. C. Mason, and Jack Mason. LITTLE RIVER The president. Mrs McGowan, presided over a fair attendance, in the Triangle Hall, at the monthly meeting of the Little River Women’s _ Institute. A bring-and-buy was held in aid of the Pioneer Women’s Centennial Memorial. The play “Grandma Old Style” was read by Mesdames Stuart, Cradock. Perry, R- Barclay, L. Breitmever. Competitions judged by Mesdames Aitkin and Smith, resulted:— Totmatoes; Mrs A. Radford 1. Miss H. Savage 2. Mrs O'Connor 3. Best bloom: Mrs‘Banks 1. Mrs Londrigan 2, Mrs Crockit 3. HAWARDEN Mrs Maxwell presided over the May meeting of the Hawarden Women’s Institute. Arrangements were made for the birthday dance and social to be held on June 10, Mrs J. Doak, who had attended a

meeting at Rangiora. of the new North Canterbury Federation gave an account of the meeting. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr Wattie and family in their recent bereavement. Mrs A. Webb and Miss Mildred Wright were the hostesses. The competition results were:—Duchosse set: Miss Mildred Wright 1, Mrs Slack 2. Mrs McKittcrick 3. Bloom: Mrs J. W. Wright 1. Miss K. Doak 2. Savouries: Mrs G. D. Scott 1, Mrs J. W. Wright 2. THE PEAKS Mrs Kennedy presided at the May meeting of The Peaks Women’s Institute. Final arrangements were made for the institute birthday party on May 19. Mesdames Kennedy and McKcegan were appointed group delegates. The roll call was new biscuit recipes. The competitions resulted as follows:—Bloom: Mrs Turner 1, Mrs F. Quigley 2, Mrs J. Quigley 3. Sponge; Mrs Hewitt 1, Miss Inch 2. Nightdress: Mrs Hewitt 1, Mrs F, Quigley 2. Pyjamas: Miss Inch 1. The hostesses were Mesdames White and Cowie. DOMETT The monthly meeting of the Domett Women's Institute was held at the residence of Mrs A. M. Hyde. In the absence of the president, Mrs J. Daly. Mrs J. Paton was in the chair. An interesting talk was given by Mrs J. Ensor, who gave a description of her recent trip to England. Competitions resulted as follows: — Vase of flowers; Mrs H. Denton 1, Mrs A. M. Hyde 2, Mrs D. Wheeler and Mrs P. F. O’Boyle (equal) 3. Sponge sandwich: Mrs D. Wheeler 1. KILLINCHY A talk on first aid was given by Dr. W. G. Volckman at the monthly meeting of the Killinchy Women’s Institute. Mrs R. G. McClure gave a report on the annual meeting of the Mid-Can-terbury Federation. Competitions, judged by Miss N.
