r4 i COLLECTION OF RATES FOR YEAR REASONABLE CREDIT BALANCE EXPECTED The county clerk and treasurer reported at a meeting of the Waipara County Council that the period since the last meeting had been one of considerable activity financially, and that 88.81 per cent, of the current year’s rate levy had been collected, leaving £149 unpaid. The figures were not quite so good as at the same date of last year, when 99.08 per cent, had been reported. After meeting the accounts before members, which totalled £2691 Os Bd, there would remain a credit balance of £1332 16s lid, to which would be added before the end of the financial ' year such sums as might be received for Government subsidies on highways and other works, and it was estimated hat the accounts would be > ilosed with a reasonable credit bal- ' ance. . _' ' . There were present Messrs A. Cowie (chairman), R. I. Black, R. C, Clifford, E. A. Foster, and D. S. Mackenzie. Citations were received from the clerk of awards in the clerical workers’ and labourers’ disputes. The clerk was instructed to attend the meeting called to formulate counter proposals. Arising out of the proposal of the North Canterbury Hospital Board to raise a loan for additions to the nurses'; home, the clerk was instrufcted to ask the board for a reply to the repreiriade fb it after the last meeting, f, Motions of sympathy were passed with Messrs E. T. Shore and O. T. Evans and families in their recent bereavements. It was reported that the Waitoln river bridge at HurUnui was nearly completed, and should be opened for traffic before the end of March, A suggestion was received that an alternative route for stock should be found between Motunaii and Amberley to obviate the necessity for driving stock on the main highway! Crs. Mackenzie, Clifford, and the clerk were . appointed a committee to investigate and report on the matter. Consideration was. given to the strengthening and widening of Overton’s road bridge, which was estimated to cost £2lO, and after discussion Crs. Foster, Black, and the clerk were deputed to investigate the proposal further. In response to representations from the Main Highways Board that consideration be given to the replacement of the Waikari Creek bridge on the Waipara-Kaikoura main highway, the clerk was instructed to advise the board that the matter had been placed before the Public Works Department in 1936, and the council’s share of the cost would be available at any time it was called for.
