ATTEMPT ON WOMEN’S SPRINT RECORDS

' MISS DECIMA NORMAN’S TIMES (PRES* ASSOCIATION TRLBOKAK.) AUCKLAND, March 16. Attempts to lower the existing world’s records for the 50 yards and 100 yards women’s sprints were made by the Australian and Empire Games champion. Miss Decima Norman, at a .meeting of the Paeroa Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club to-night. In the 50 yards. Miss Norman registered 6sec, which equals the New Zealand record, held by Mrs J. W. Keeps, formerly Miss I. Campbell, since February, 1937. Miss Norman ran the 100 yards in 11 2-ssec, this being two-fifths of a second outside the existing world’s record for the distance. Miss Norman was very tired when she arrived at Paeroa in the afternoon, after the six hours’ train journey from Rotorua, and this probably had some effect on her running. Assisting Miss Norman in the 50 yards attempt was Mrs R. Laurent, and Miss V. Taylor, of Paeroa, who is prominent in athletics in the Waikato, was with her in the 100 yards run. Miss Norman will compete in events at a meeting at Morrinsville on Saturday, when competitors from Auckland will also be present.
