PERMITS NECESSARY MINISTER EXPLAINS NEW REGULATIONS (PREEE ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) . WELLINGTON, March 16. By Order-in-Council published in the Gazette, the exportation of fresh vegetables and fresh tomatoes from the Dominion is prohibited, save with the consent of the Minister for Customs. ] The Minister for Agriculture (the ; Hon. W. Lee Martin) explained that * this action had been taken so as to en- < sure that all consignments of vegetables i and fresh tomatoes from the Dominion 1 should be made in a manner which 1 would not be prejudicial to the export ( trade in these goods. . i “To this end,” he said, “no permits ( will be issued to export fresh vege- ] tables overseas, except in clean new j sacks, or other approved packages. < New sacks will not, however, be in- j sisted on in the case of goods exported as ships’ stores. Applications for permits to export vegetables, other than ® as ships’ stores, are to be made in the first instance to the Department of f Agriculture at the port of intended * shipment. Applications must indicate s the name of the consignor, the name ot ® the consignee, the destination, quan- ' tity, and kind of vegetables to be ex- fi ported, the nature of the packages to ( be used. and the name ol the vessel in which the ship- a ment is being made. The de- v partment’s inspectors will notify the 1 Collector of Customs at the port of shipment, and that officer will then, on behalf of the Minister for Customs, issue a permit for the export of the shipment. “Arrangements are being made by the Customs Department for issue to shipping companies of general permits for the export of vegetables as ships’ stores, and for shipment of vegetables, other than potatoes, to the Pacific islands of Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Cook Islands, Savage Islands, or the Society Islands. Shipping companies should not accept vegetables for export otherwise than as ships’ stores unless there is presented to them a permit issued by the Minister for Customs authorising exportation.”
