PRAISE FOR MR SEMPLE
T IMPROVED ROADS AND SAFETY CAMPAIGN MOTOR UNION’S DISCUSSION (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, March 16. “I think we all must recognise that there has been a marvellous improves ment .in our roads,” said Mr W. T. i Guild (Taranaki), in moving at the t half-yearly meeting of the North v Island Motor Union to-day, that the » union place on record its gratitude to the Minister for Transport (the Hon. - R. Semple) for the improved condition * of highways, the removal of level t crossings, and the success of the road - safety campaign. :. Mr E. Palliser (Wellington): I think i we might rush into this without thinking just who has been responsible for - this improvement. We have a won- » derful body in the Main Highways t Board. Some of the problems would - have staggered engineers as recently rs r 10 years ago, but the board’s engineers d have overcome them. Any motion f should have embodied in it suitable . reference to the work of the Main 3 Highways Board and its engineers. s Mr E. A. Batt (Wellington): I think i we should be a little guarded. While > we appreciate what has been done, it i has been at enormous cost, quite out i of proportion to the ability of our little t country to pay, and thinking people of - the country don’t approve. 3 At this stage Mr Batt said he did not i wish the rest of his remarks reported, t and the discussion was continued in : committee. - An amendment by Mr Batt that the ; Minister be thanked for his enthusiasm \ and activity regarding road safety, I and that appreciation be expressed of I the extent of the work and the excel- . lent workmanship of the Main Highi ways Board lapsed for want of a , seconder. The motion with the amend- ■ ment suggested by Mr Palliser was then carried.
