Beaupartir. the Auckland Cup winner prevailing by a nose. Cheval de Volee led all the way. He was joined by Namara_ at the halfmile and Beaupartir, who had a llttld’ in the initial half of the journey, moved uo on the outside of this pair as they turned for home.. Cheval de Volee always had a little the better of the dispute with the three-year-old and worried film out of it at the finish. Rustem was second to last until reaching the turn for home, and came on well at the end to nil third berth. Play On. always well placed, was fourth. Peerless was going well behind the leaders running to the home turn, where she received an opening on the rails, but she was not equal to the task and completely failed to produce her customary finishing run. Namara was beaten at the home turn, but struggled on to finish on terms with Peerless. and It was a fair performance for a promoted hack having his first start over a distance. Beaupartir’s effort was a good one for a three-year-old, especially in view of the fact that he had not raced since the New Year meetings. He looks a good prospect for next week’s St. Leger Stakes at Trentham. The Nightmarch filly, Russian Ballet, third favourite, scored a comfortable win in the Flying Handicap. She ran round the two leaders, Life Guard and Oratory, when they lined up for home, and completely outstayed her opponents, winning by two lengths from the veteran Taitoru. who finished on too well for Rolllcker and Race Call. .Race Call, the favourite, was well placed at the home turn, but put Ho dash into his finishing effort. Rolllcker cut out in the middle stages. He came on again at the end, and failed only by a head for second money. Life Guard and Oratory both faded out in the straight after setting a strong pace to the turn.

ACCEPTANCES FOR SECOND DAY

CROMWELL J.C.

PROGRAMME FOR TO-DAY

The annual meeting of the Cromwell Racing Club will be opened to-day with the following programme:—

LEADING THREE-YEAR-OLDS

MEETING THIS WEEK (By CARBINE.) The Oaks winner. Peerless, won the Rangitikei Cup last week-end in such good style that she will be one of the favourites now for the Taranaki Cup. She carried 8-3 in the Rangitikei Cup. and with a small rchandlcap, will have 8-5 at New Plymouth. The field Peerless beat on Saturday was of moderate quality, but she beat if handsomely, and drew away at the right end, which suggests that the extra furlong at - New Plymouth will suit her. It may be said in her favour, too, that the Rangitikei Cup was run in race record time. Another leading three-year-old- ITT the Taranaki Cup Is Beaupartir, who. with 8-12, will be conceding Peerless 71b. Beaupartir (who was second to Defaulter) finished a neck in front of Peerless (third) in the Great Northern Derby, and conceded her 31b (se* allowance). Apart from the result Of the race, the meeting of these three-year-olds should be interesting. Another three-year-old in the field Is Namara. Namara’a;: form entitles him to nothing above the minimum weight, but it will not be surprising if he runs a really good race. Cheval de Volee, Play On, and Taitoru are recent winners, whose presence in the field should make for a wholesome spread of wagering. Taitoru is one of the wonders of the turf. He is nine years old. but galloped like a young horse when he won the open seven at Rangitikei on Saturday. Fittingly, he was accorded an ovation. After a successful career he was off the scene a while with respiratory trouble, but since his recent return to the turf he has won two races. „ x A mare who ran an excellent race in the Rangitikei Cup is Dainty Sue, a five-year-old Australian importation by Drake from Masked Battery. Coming from last, Dainty Sue was galloping faster than anything else at the finish, and on a bigger course would have troubled Peerless, perhaps have beaten her. On this form, it should be possible to place Dainty Sue where she can win a middle-distance handicap before the season is through. Taurangi’s form among the sprinters at Rangitikei was worth taking a little’notice of. The Beau Pere filly should score during the autumn.
