RACING AND TROTTING

TIMARU T.C.

PROGRAMME FOR TO-MORROW

The Timaru Trotting Club’s autumn neeting. to be held on the Washdyke •acecourse to-m.orrow, promises to be i highly interesting and successful gathering. There are two classic •aces —one for three-year-old trotters ind one for two-year-old pacers—to be iecided, and these events will claim special attention from racegoers. The ;wo principal handicap events have attracted improvers of outstanding merit, and the fields for the minor races are comprised of horses of an even calibre which should provide close finishes. Betting will be done on the singlepool system, paying two dividends, and the following horses are likely to race prominently:— Temuka Handicap: Petite, Dancing Pirate* Coquette. New Zealand Trotting Stakes: Gallant Amazon. Echoist, Shirley Temple. Seadown Handicap; Gay Lady, Battlevale. Super Jack. • Timaru Trotting Cup Handicap: Donald Dhu, Toorak, Ferry Post. TURF GOSSIP

Reminders Nominations for the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps will close at 5 p.m. to-day. Acceptances for the first day of the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting will clos- at 5 p.m. to-day. Track Work at Riccarton Welcome rain which fell throughout training hours at Riccarton yesterday did not interfere much with the morning’s work. For the first time for some weeks, galloping was confined to a grass track, the plough being out of use - The No. 1 track next to the course proper was thrown open, and it provided soft but fast going early, but was cutting up for the late workers. Main interest was centred in the horses book to race at Trentham next week, and practically all of these were out. Smart Sprints’ Counterblast was the first to appear and she reeled of! half a mile home in 49sec, and Wild Chase followed in 49 2-Ssec.

Lady Leigh, assisted by Ruapehu, ran half a mile along the back stretch in 48 3-ssec. The track suited Lady Leigh and her form at Trentham will depend upon the condition of the going there. Trench Fight covered a mile in Imin 41sec, taking 50sec for the first half. This horse is in excellent order, and will disapnoint if he does not face prominently next week. Great Flight and Wild Talk impressed by galloping seven furlongs in Imin 29sec, the last four in 52sec. Going North Royal Chief gave Settlement a three lengths’ lead opmmencing seven furlongs, and Settlement finished a length in frqnt in Imin 29 3-ssec, the last four in 52sec. Royal Chief is to be accepted for in the Thompson Handicap, and provided all goes well with him in the meantime he is to fulfil the engagement. A rider has not yet been secured for him. B. H. Morris is to rid.e him on the second day. but may not be able to take the mount on the first day. Settlement went very well, and is undoubtedly a much improved galloper. He is to have one race only at Trentham, over a mile and three furlongs, on the second day. Sound Work

Prudent Prince jumped away .clear of Moorsotis starting off on a half-mile sprint along the back, but the latter drew up to his mate passing the three furlong post, and finished in front in 50sec. While Prudent Prince impressed by his burst of speed. Moorsotis once again indicated staying ability. The latter will be seriously tested at Trenthhm, but should hold his own against his powerful North Island opponents Royal Huntress was to have galloped half a mile with Night Hawk, but the latter refused to go on this track, and was worked on the sand, the Safari filly doing her task alone in SlsecArgentic and Haunty Winner attracted attention by galloping six furlongs in Imin 16 3-ssec, the last four in 51 sec, the former, holding a slight advantage throughout the run home. Their stablemate, Improvident, went over the same ground in Imin 17 3-ssec, the last four in 52 2-ssec. A Fast Six

After the interval Dictate and Kilrobe were sent six furlongs, but the latter cleared out from her mate, and finished several lengths in front in the good time of Imin 14 2-ssec, the last four in 50 3-ssec, Dictate taking 52sec. Kilrobe had a light boy in control, and could not be held in restraint early. Dictate was galloped on in the Kinloch Handicap at Motukarara, and was evidently feeling the effects. Rebellion ran half a mile in 50 2-ssec, and Density followed in 49sec, the last three furlongs in 36sec. The latter appears to have bright prospects in the Railway Handicap on the minimum. She will be ridden by A. Stokes. Spartan strode over seven furlongs in Imin 34sec, and his stable companic , Master Hotspur, was let off with light exercise. Not Out was allowed to take Imin 24 2-ssec for six furlongs, the last four in 55sec. He is due to go to Trentham. St. Leger Candidate Capricious, joined by Night Dress at seven furlongs, covered a mile and a quarter in 2min l'4sec, the last half in 52sec. She is to contest the St. Leger Stakes at Trentham. and will have the services of C. T. Wilson.

Jumpers In Action . Courtyard followed Redolent* over three of the steeplechase brush fences. This was his first attempt over , these obstacles, and although jumping very big, ,he shaped satisfactorily. Redolent as usual gave a dashing display. Later Courtyard accompanied Pladie and'.Bright Prospect over four brush hurdles, all jumping, well, Chanteur and Pol Roger also went over four brush hurdles at a strong pace.

Changed Hands Clessgmor has been purchased by Mr A. Lile, of New Plymouth, and he will probably be put to jumping. Mr Lile formerly owned Omeo, Illuminate, Tigerlsm, and Royal Bengal, and made two visits to Riccarton with Omeo. Early Retirement Wotan ran his last race in the Wanganui Cup. It had been obvious for a long time that he had gone sour, and his owners have now decided to retire him to the stud. . A Young Hurdler The inclusion of Wyhardo in the Waitara Hurdles at New Plymouth yesterday was interesting, as this colt is only a three-year-old; and horses of the age may not start over fences till February 1. Last * Season ‘Wild Irishman took on hurdling as a three-year-old in May and quickly showed promise at the game, but he unfortunately broke a leg at Riccarton last August and was lost to the Turf. Wynardo, who is trained by H. Gray, is a bay son of The Ace and the Glen Albyn mare, Wynette, who does not appear to have raced. His only success to date was in one of the Avondale two-year-old races last season.

A Strong Field The Awapuni Gold Cup, to be run at the Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting the week after Trentham. looks like being one of the best contests staged in this event for some years. Some rain between now and the eve of the Manawatu meeting would materially improve the prospects of a full acceptance, but with Royal Chief, Queen of Song, Amigo, Taurangi. Smoke Screen. Beaupartir, Peerless, Homily, and Gay Son among, those entered, a really strong field should be obtained. The race was won last year by Stretto, who was in brilliant form at the time. Royal Chief, who was very sore, ran second.

A Fit Colt • Beaulivre has not raced since the Wellington Cup meeting, where he won a double, and his next start will be in the North Island Challenge Stakes on the second day of the approaching autumn meeting. That he is a fit colt he proved at on Tuesday when he was always clear of Globe Trotter in a five furlongs gallop, covering the last half-mile in 48sec. Out of Luck

Mr Max Steinberg, of Auckland, has bad the misfortune to lose the services of his two good juveniles, Konneta and Wapaugh. Since the departure of High Caste, Konneta has been regarded as the best two-year-old in the Auckland Province, and she looked certain to win some money for her owner during the late autumn campaign. A few days ago she strained a ligament and will now have to be put aside; and her stablemate, Wapaugh, fell on the road and cut himself badly. With Elanage, whom he has trained in Australia, also under a cloud lately, Mr Steinberg has had his share of misfortune. A Big Draw Sydney writers are expecting a record attendance at Randwick if Ajax comes through his Melbourne racing this week undefeated and is allowed to meet Defaulter at Easter. The biggest attendance ever recorded officially at Randwick was 92,287 at the Easter meeting in 1922, when a meeting between Beauford and Eurythmic created widespread interest. This pair clashed in; the Autumn Stakes and Beauford won. The Autumn Stakes is run on the opening day of the A.J.C. Easter meeting and is a mile and a half race at standard weight-for-age. As Defaulter is not engaged in the St. Leger, this, is the .most likely race in which he will meet Ajax.

Record Threatened By his success in the King’s Plate at Flemington yesterday, Ajax’s winning sequence is 17, and as he looks to have the C. M. Lloyd Stakes, of £IOOO, weight-for-age, one mile,, to be run to-morrow, at his mercy, he will be one behind the sequence record of 19 for Australia and New Zealand held jointly by Desert Gold and Gloaming. Desert Gold established it nearly 20 years ago, and Gloaming equalled it four years later. Gloaming looked certain to make it 20, but his defeat was brought about by Thespian in the Islington Plate at Ellerslie, when The Hawk set such a’terrific pace that he ran Gloaming into the ground and Thespian came along to collect the prize in record time. Phar Lap’s best sequence was 14. At the time he was racing he was so definitely superior to everything that he looked certain to go on and establish a new record. However, the New Zealander Waterline, who had a big pull in the weights, sensationally brought about Phar Lap’s defeat in the C. M. Lloyd Stakes at Flemington, Drastic Action

At 3anta Anita Park in January, the Horse Racing Board had a clean-up among the jockeys. Seventeen were refused licences, and later five were suspended for foul riding. One of the jockeys who was refused a licence attempted to commit suicide by turning on the gas in his hotel room, but was resuscitated. According to an exchange, the board’s drastic action benefited backers. Over the first three weeks 43 per cent, of favourites—were successful. It was thought that some jockeys were scared by the refusal of licences and suspensions, and in consequence were on their best behaviour throughout.

Leading Riders By riding three winners at the Rangitikei Racing Club’s meeting last Saturday, W. Broughton further increased his lead in the jockeys’ premiership, and his record is now 44 wins. With 39 wins, H. Wiggins still holds second place, and is closely followed by B. H. Morris and G. R. Tattersall, who both had successes at New Plymouth yesterday. The following is the list of the leading jockeys for the season:— W. J. Brough- C, T. Wilson 22 ton .. 44 P. Burgess .1 20 H. N. Wiggins 39 J. Chaplin .. 20 B. H. Morris 36 O. Evans .. 21' G, R. THAMES T.C.

PROGRAMME FOR TO-MORROW fTHE PRESS Special Service.l AUCKLAND, March 9. Trotting will be revived in the Auckland province with the Thames Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, when large well-balanced fields will provide fine contests and keen wide-range speculation on the win and place machines. As a number of horses racing at Thames are booked for Wanganui and the following circuit fixtures, form will have more than passing interest. . , . Post positions will play a big part in the Hikutaia Handicap, in which many with placed performances will clash. These are Tumble. Scottish Bard. Auto Bingen. Davey Day, Kewple’s Bingen, and Wlnhisway. Other likely ones are Loyal Betty. Neon Oro. Josedale Grattan, Northern Smile.. and Grand Dame. The best backed may be Tumble, Scottish Bard, and Auto Bingen. By virtue of her two placings in a tighter class without incurring penalties. Gay Moko will see a short price in the Parawai Trot. Her most dangerous opponents will be > Glen Bingen. Great Guy, Mah Jong, Sir Tony, Gold Kip. and Arumar. The favourites may be Gay Moko. Great Guy. and Sir Tony. There is an absence of two miles form in the Turua Bracelet field, although Chaise was fourth at Christmas and Roma Girl has won well at a mile and five furlongs. Fisher, Lynn Rey, Reyola, and Tommy McElwyn are prospects. The fancies may be Roma Girl, Reyola, and Lynn Rey. A fine field will parade for the Thames Cup, and the only two miles winner listed is Peter Smith, but Bold Venture has been twice placed in a little faster time. Petite Jewel, Our Summer, Lucky Love, Lady Amanda, and Transwell have credentials as stayers, and a good game finisher like Santa Fe must be respected. Investors may prefer Bold Venture, Saqta Fe, or Paraurl and Peter Smith. Form in the Hikutaia Handicap will be a good guide for the Puriri Handicap, and the extra two furlongs may suit the .improving three-year-old Auto Bingen. Scottish Bard and Tumble will be in demand, but if the latter is absent the Neon Oro —Josedale Grattan bracket will be well supported. If Dick Redmond starts he will probably be first choice for the President’s Trot, but the hard track will not he to his liking, and there is not so far a prosSect of easy footing. The fancies may iclude Chudic, Canadian, and Win Huon. Many of the Kerepeehi Handicap field will race earlier at two miles. If Lynn Rey earns a penalty and is absent the preference may be for Hlllcrest. Lady Potts, and Reyola. There will be a very large field in the Kopu Handicap, which contains smart sprinters in Bedford, Elsie Hamlyn, Kete Kura, Stargum, Tangaroa, Loyal Direct, Lucky Love, Luminate, Paraurl, and Peter Smith. In a wide range the order may be Loyal Direct, Bedford, and Kete Kura. The programme is as follows: 12 p.m.—

4.15 p.m.— KEHEPEEHI HANDICAP, of £135. Smin Isec class. One mile and a quarter. TROTTING NOTES

Reminders Acceptances for the Cheviot Trotting Club’s meeting will close on Monday at 9 p.m. Nominations for the Westland Trotting Club’s meeting will close on Tuesday at 9 p.m. Spelling Frisco Lady has been placed on the easy list and at the moment she is enjoying a spell on her owners’ property a't. Hutt Park. Although she is now on a fairly tight mark over all distances, she has been a winner this season and she should continue to pay her way when she rejoins M. B. Edwards’s team after her holiday. An Improver Petite has done little racing this season, but she has attracted favourable attention and the manner in which she left the maiden classes pointed to her as one likely to prove at least useful. She claims an engagement in the Temuka Handicap at Timaru to-morrow and she may be expected to race prominently. Timaru Brackets

The following horses will be bracketed at the Timaru meeting tomorrow:—Temuka Handicap, Easter Rush and King Drusus; Timaru Trotting Cup Handicap, Colonel Grattan and Toorak; Kingsdown Handicap, Blue Logan and Peggotty; Timaru Nursery Stakes, David Derby and Imperial Jade, Durability and Portfolio, Gallant Chief and Highland Scott; Wai-iti Handicap, Gay Lady and Royal Grattan. Racing Well Since being taken over from B. Grice, Gay Lady has been racing well for A. Holmes, and her displays at the recent Invercargill meeting will draw attention to her prospects at Timaru to-morrow, when she will be asked to concede the limit horses in the Seadown Handicap 12 yards start. This mare has always possessed speed, and she appears to be acquiring solid racing manners with experience and travelling. Knows the Track

R. Townley can usually produce a trotter worthy of respect, and his representative in the New Zealand Trotting Stakes, at Timaru will be Shirley Temple, a filly by Wrack from Bright Eyes. Trained at Washdyke, Shirley Temple is sure to command a local following, and she will have the advantage of knowing the track thoroughly. Last season Townley provided the run-ner-up in this event in Reta’s Own, and a classic victory for him would be extremely popular. A Difficult Task .

As with the majority of the good trotters, Peggotty is now back on a mark where she gets few opportunities to be seen to advantage, and her task of conceding starts ranging up to 72 yards in the Kingsdown Handicap is a difficult one. However, she will be opposed by a smaller field than has been the case in the majority of her

recent races, and a mare of her beginning ability and reliable habits is sure to appeal. She will be coupled with an improving trotter in Blue Logan, who will start from the limit, and this bracket will have many friends. Timaru Train Arrangements A special passenger train, will leave Christchurch for the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting to-morrow at 8 a.m., arriving at the racecourse at 11.12 a.m. It will stop at Addington, Sockburn, Hornby, Templeton, Rolleston, Dunsandel, Rakaia, Ashburton, Hinds, Orari, and Temuka. Passengers from Chertsey will travel by. the usual 9.9 a.m. train and join the special train at Ashburton. A return train will leave Timaru at 5.28 p.m., and is due at Christchurch at 8.50 p.m., while the Invercargill-Christchurch express _ train (Timaru depart 4.34 p.m.) will, if required, stop at Washdyke to pick up passengers. Nursery Stakes Favourite There is little doubt that Highland Scot will go out at a short price in the Timaru Nursery Stakes to-morrow, and providing that he meets with no misfortune during the running, he will have every chance to endorse the high opinion held of him. In winning the Great Northern Trotting Stakes at Epsom last month, Mr J. McKenzie’s two-year-old gave proof of his extreme speed, and although he met only a small field, no fault could be found with his display other than that he was slightly slow in striking his hopples from the barrier. To-morrow he will meet a much larger field, and any tendency to dwell at the barrier will make his task a difficult one, but his credentials are the best. He will be coupled with Gallant Chief, a Gallant Knight youngster who pleased by the manner in which he handled the grass track to win in his outing at the matinee meeting held at New Brighton last Tuesday. Solid Bracket With Colonel Grattan and Toqrak engaged from the limit, Mr J. Richardson will have bright prospects of winning the Timaru Cup Handicap tomorrow. Both of these pacers have done well this season to prove themselves capable of reaching this class, and although they will be strongly opposed on this occasion, their form is of a high standard. In his last outing Colonel Grattan established a mile and a half record of 3min 13 l-ssec, and as he has shown that he car. cover two miles, he has strong claims for support. Toorak is probably the most consistent pacer in commission at the present time, and it is doubtful if any horse in his class has a longer list of placed performances. A solid and reliable racehorse, Toorak has been racing without being favoured with luck, but he cannot go much longer without being returned a winner,>and when succes comes his way again it will oe well deserved. Well-bred Yearlings F. G. Holmes is handling two particularly attractive Rey de Oro yearlings in a filly from Trix Pointer and a colt from Bonny Logan. They are to be put through their early paces before being turned out. Both show quality and early promise, and their careers will be watched with interest. Trix Pointer, an American-bred mare who proved herself a high-class racehorse here before being retired to the matrons’ paddock, has already leftchampions in the double-gaited Wrackler and Arethusa. an exceptionally game juvenile performer. She also left another good trotter in Reclaim. Bonny Logan was a fine race mare and she has been represented on the tracks by the brilliant but unsound Gaillard, and Bayard and Coquette. The present yearlings from these mares begin their education for racing with every prospect of proving champions.
