MODERATE LOCAL TURNOVER

AUSTRALIAN INDUSTRIALS AGAIN IMPROVE

There was a moderate turnover on the Christchurch Stock Exchange yesterday. Price levels generally were well maintained and several Australian industrials showed improvement.

New Zealand Government 3£ per cent, stock due 1953-57 changed hands at £9l 10s and more was offered at that price. New Zealand Government 4 per cent, stock due 1946 was firmer at £9B 12s 6d.

Southland Frozen Meat >was firm at 27s 6d, market closing 3d either way. Westport-Stockton Coal (pref., cum div.) remained unaltered, with sellers and dealings at 7s 6d, buyers at 7s 3d. Anthony Hordern were firmer on buyers’ offers, 15s. Sellers of Australian Consolidated Industries reduced their limits to £5 16s, buyers at £5 14s 6d. Australian Iron and Steel (pref.) were firmer, with buyers at 27s 9d. Buyers of British Tobacco raised their bids to 50s 6d, sellers at 51s 6d. Broken Hill Proprietary advanced to 58s 6d and 58s lOd, sellers staying in at the higher price, buyers at 58s 9d. Dunlop Rubber were firmer on buyers’ offers, 21s 10d. Electrolytic Zinc had dealings at 48s 3d and 48s 6d, market closing 48s buyers, 48s 3d sellers. Hume Pipe (Australia) (cum div.) advanced to 20s 6d. market closing 3d either way. Woolworllis (South Africa) were fractionally weaker, with sellers and business cit 15s Broken Hill South (cum div.) rose sharply to 29s 4d, and more were wanted at that price, sellers at 30s 6d. Mount Lvell were stronger, with buyers at 27s lOd. Buyers of North Broken Hill offered 48s 6d, Is above Wednesday’s business, but sellers wanted 49s Cd. Grey River moved up a point to 17s Hd, and there were further sellers at that figure, buyers at 17s lOd. Worksop Extended had business at Hd, market closing Id either way.

BIG RIVER The Big River returns for the months of January and February are:— Battery Department—2l9 tons of ore crushed for 113oz sdwt melted gold. Cyanide Department—lso tons sands treated for 16oz bullion. Total estimated value —£910. In addition, 2i tons of concentrates were saved, valued at £7O. In estimating the above values, gold has been taken at 150s a fine oz.

TALISMAN DUBBO

Talisman Dubbo reports that for the fortnight, ended February 18, 175 tons of ore realised £279, with gold valued at £7 12s an ounce.

ARGO

The Argo Gold Dredging Company, Ltd., announces that a dividend (No. 17) of Id a share (free of income tax) has been declared on all the shares in the company, and will be payable on March 22. , ~ This dividend represents a distribution of £2OOO to the shareholders. The sum of £4OO has been placed to the general reserve fund, which now stands at £3BOO. Transfer books will, be closed from March 15 to 22 inclusive.

The yarding of store sheep a} the St. Andrews sale was the largest offered this season. The bulk of the entry comprised aged ewes. There was a good attendance of buyers, and competition for young breeding ewes was keen. A line of wellgrown and good-conditioned Romney cross two-tooth ewes realised 29s 4d, which is the highest price paid at auction this season in South Canterbury. Best two-topth ewes made '27s to 2Bs 4d, medium 2Xs to 235. good crossbred four and five-year ewes 12s to 15s, medium 8s to Us, good rape lambs to 13s 2d, medium lambs 8s to Ss 6d. Export buyers were not operating In the fat sheep section. Speculators acquired practically the whole of the entry. Prices were equal to previous sales. Extra heavy ewes made 9s to 11s, medium 6s to Bs, prime wethers 16s to 17s 6d, and light 13s to 15s.
