CULVERDEN EWE FAIR

A Disappointing Sale

Top-priced Four-year-olds 17/6

As was the case last year, the fair yesterday at Culverden marked the first set-back in prices since the series commenced. At Hawarden and Waiau, the two fairs at which similar sheep were offered, values had progressively increased on the low values ruling at Amfaerley at the opening of the series, but. any appreciation at Waiau was lost yesterday, when values practically ruled at Hawarden rates. In the case of better four-year-olds, values were scarcely, as good as at Hawarden, but middle-class four-year-olds probably met with a slightly freer market. All classes of two-tooths showed little change, and old, poor-conditioned sheep, as at previous fairs, were not wanted. More standard station lines are offered at the Culverden fair than at any of the other auctions, but this fact did not appear to influence the market to much extent. The heavy rain in the early morning impeded the work of drafting and penning, and it was after mid-day before the sale commenced. The steadying in prices was scarcely expected, after the useful rain that had fallen in the district overnight, approximating an inch over a wide area of the country, with more rain promising during the progress of the sale. A cold wind prevailed, and this, on top of the rain, did not help to improve the appearance of the sheep. The advertised entry was about 36,000, but somes lines did not come forward, whilst others were smaller than advertised. The total offered was between 22,000 and 23,000. The Two-Tooths The sale commenced with the twotooths, of which there was a well-con-ditioned display. The sale from the outset was slow, and a number of pens of quite good two-tooths ranged round about 22g to 235. The best pens evoked a wider range of bidding, and the top price of the sale was made at 295, the same figure as at Hawarden and Waiau. This was for a pen of 67 two-tooths sold by Jas, Dwyer (Culverden), and 183 Corriqdales sold by Johns Bros. (Pahau Downs),' The latter vendors equalled top price last year with another breeder at 43s for a truck lot, so that the disparity between the two years’ fairs as far as the best prices are concerned is greater at Culverden than at any of the preceding fairs. Other pens from various vendors sold at from 26s to 28s, The Four-Year-Olds The showing of four-year sheep was much the best of the year, and whilst there was free competition for the medium to good ewes, the level of prices slipped for the lower conditioned. The Kaiwara draft of four-year-olds sent forward by L. R. C. Macfarlane, 1072 in number, was generally regarded as about thfe best seen so far this season lor a big lot at any of the fairs, and the first run-off topped the market at 17s 6d, the remainder making 16s. This vendor topped the market lastfairat 28s for the first run-eff, and 26s 6d andl 26s for the remainder. Another outstanding draft of four-year ewes came from G R. Macdonald (Lowry Hills), the 420 making from 16s 6d to 17s 6d. The Lowry Hills four-year-olds last year made 265. Quite a number of lines made considerably less than half of the figure of last year. One which then sold at 27s and 27s 3d made Us 9d yesterday. A good average, on the market, was secured for four-year sheep yesterday by Macfarlane (Lyndon), whose first draft made 15s 6d iand 16s for 520, and 13s 9d for 39 fLast year the best of the Lyndon Sheep sold at 275, end the remainder down to 25s 6d and 24s 6d. P Some good drafts of five-year ewes were penned, and met with competition M. Bethell topped the market With 136 6d for 175. This Vendor s similar draft at last fair mades 24s 9d. Very few lots were passed, and most of them were sold privately afterward.
