HOSPITAL LADY VISITORS’ ASSOCIATION MEETING OF COMMITTEE Reports of work done during the month were presented by sub-commit-tees of the Hospital Lady Visitors’ Association at a committee meeting of the association held at the Christchurch Public Hospital. Bowen. , . _ , It was reported that during February, 16 patients had been granted one week, and six patients had been granted two weeks at the Rhodes Convalescent Home. Eight patients at the hospital had been engaged in occupational work, and two parcels of wool, silk, and embroidery cotton had been received from Mrs R. S. Hunter Blair. Mrs Stewart reported that the nurses rest cottage at Sumner had been occupied during the whole of the month. CERCLE FRANCAIS FIRST MEETING OF SEASON ADDRESS BY MR G. TROUP The first meeting for the season of the CercAe Ytaxwava was held at the Students’ Union Building. Canterbury University College. The programme was arranged by the president, Madame Alan Just, Mrs Maxwell Sunley, and Miss Muriel Ollivier, the hostesses for the evening. Mr Gordon Troup gave, m French, an interesting talk on the Province of. Poitou and described the beauties of its countryside, its chateaux, and its windmills. He mentioned many of its picturesque and ancient small towns Riffique, famous for its pate aux truffes, La Rochelle and the district of La Vendee, and its historical associations with Joan of Arc, the Huguenots, and the Royalists. He spoke also of Poitiers, with its military academy and university, and its battlefields of the Hundred Years’ War. Mr Troup gave his personal impressions, wherein he disagreed with some references by Jules Michelet and other writers. The character of the people he gave as doggedly persevering, shrewd, and undaunted. Caves with prehistoric inscriptions attest the ancient occupation of the province, and the many ruins in Poitiers itself included a Roman mausoleum and vestiges of old citadels, he said. Mr C. L. Low proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Troup, and the president also expressed the thanks of-all present. A LONDON WEDDING FAIRFAX—HEALD orxou OUX OW» COHE*3POHDIMT.) LONDON. February 16. Two young people who have many friends in New Zealand were married at St. George’s, Hanover square, yesterday. It is understood that they first became acquainted in the Dominion, where they were climbing. The bridegroom was Mr Vincent Fairfax, only son of Mr and Mrs Hubert Fairfax, of Sydney. The bride was Miss Nancy Heald, eldest daughter of Dr. and Mrs C. B. Heald, of 3 Cannon place, Hampstead. The Rev, Walter Scott officiated. The bride wore a classical gown of parchment-tinted moire with the train cut in one with the skirt. The gauged bodice was cut with a heart-shaped neckline, and the long, tight-fitting sleeves were full at the top. Her grandmother’s old Honiton lace veil was mounted on tulle and held in place by a wreath of orange blossom, and she carried a bouquet of dark red roses. There were four bridesmaids— Miss Betty and Miss Audrey Heald, sisters of the bride. Miss Betty Montagu Brown, and Miss Susie Miller, They wore blouses of gold lame under full-skirted dresses of ruby red velvet, cut on medieval lines, and had bouquets of shaded red flowers to match those in their hair. Mr Don Mackay was best man. A reception was held at Chesterfield House. The bride and bridegroom left for a honeymoon in Switzerland. GOLDEN WEDDING MR AND MRS J. CUTTANCE Mr and Mrs Joseph Cuttance, of Weld street, Hokitika, celebrated their golden wedding on Tuesday. They were married on March 7, 1889, at St. Joseph’s Chapel, Queenstown, the Rev. Father John McKay being the officiating clergyman. Mr and Mrs Cuttance spent many years of their married life in South Westland and have lived in later years in Hokitika. There was a happy gathering of the family and relatives to celebrate the anniversary. ST. CUTHBERT’S GUILD At the first meeting of the year held by the Ladies’ Guild of St. Cuthbert’s Church, Governor’s Bay, the following officers were elected; —President, Mrs Brown; vice-presidents, Mesdames Harland and Grieg, and Miss Allen; secretary and treasurer, Mrs Griffen. The Rev. Mr Evans gave a short talk on the work of the church. Successful competitors in the floral competitions were:—Asters, Miss Allen 1 and 2; zinnias, Miss Allen 1 and 2; carnations, Miss Wheeler 1. Miss Allen 2. Tindal Webster (Timaru). COMPLIMENTARY SOCIAL AT ASHBURTON TRIBUTES PAID TO REV. ANGUS M’BEAN A complimentary social was given to the Rev. Angus Mcßean, new president of the Methodist Conference of New Zealand, by the Ashburton Methodist Circuit on Wednesday evening. There was a large attendance at the Baring Square Methodist Church. Mr F. Frampton (circuit steward) presided, and presentee! a gold-mounted eversharp pencil to Mr Mcßean, to mark the opening of his presidential year, &nd the induction of the first Ashburton minister to the office, Mr H. Money extended congratulations from the congregation. He spoke of Mr Mcßean’s faithful service, and assured him of the loyalty of the church. Speaking for the trustees, Mr F. H. Steel mentioned the honour bestowed on the circuit by the election of Mr Mcßean as president. Other speakers were Messrs W. J. Brown (local preachers), C. Bishop (Bible classes), T. Wakelin’ (Sunday school), and Mrs Spicer (Ladies’ Guild). Mr Mcßean thanked the speakers, and said that he was happy in his work. He gave reminiscences of his early life as a preacher. Items were given as follows:—Vocal solo, Mrs J. H. Millar; instrumental, Messrs G. Penman, M. Penman, and C. Dellow; anthems, the choir, under the baton of Mr H. A. Humphreys. Miss R, Porter was accompanist. A competition was won by Mrs Mcßean. A buttonhole was. presented to Mr Mcßean by Mrs F. Frampton, and a bouquet was presented to Mrs Mcßean by -Miss Mavis Money. SOCIAL AT KAIAPOI An enjoyable time was spent at the Foresters’ Hall, Kaiapoi, by members of the Kaiapoi Men’s Hockey Club and their friends, when a “variety” gift party was held in honour of Mr H. E. Green and Miss D, Caan, whose marriage will take place shortly. Messrs A. Tavendale and R. Taylor were the masters of ceremonies and music for the dancing was supplied by Messrs A. O. Eyles and C.
