SOUTH AFRICA MAKES 193

FOR THREE WICKETS

DURBAN, March 8.

On the fifth day of the final test between England and South Africa, England completed its first innings with a total of 316, and at stumps South Africa had lost three wickets in its second, innings for 193 runs. Play finished early on account of the bad light. South Africa after England’s minor collapse, plodded along as in the first innings. The present test is to be played to a finish, because the margin of wins to date is not greater than one. The first two tests of the senes, limited to four days, were drawn in favour of England. England won the third by an innings and 13 runs The fourth was drawn in favour of South Africa. Scores;—

A reception was extended to Sir Julien Cahn’s cricket team by the Government this morning in Wellington. Representatives of all sporting bodies irj Wellington were present, also the Chief Justice, the Rt. Hon. Sir Michael Myers, the Solicitor-General, Mr H. H. Cornish, the Minister for Defence. the' Hon. F. Jones, and the General Manager of Railways, Mr G. H. Mackley, and Mr Phillips, chairman of the management committee of the Wellington Cricket Association, other members of the committee, and Mr E. E. Luttrell, of Christchurch, secretary of the New Zealand Cricket Council. The reception was conducted by the Hon. Walter Nash, in the absence of the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, who was on official business. Mr Nash apologised for the absence of Mr Savage, and also for that of the Hon. P. Fraser, both of whom sent messages of appreciation of Sir Julien s action in bringing a team to New Zealand. Mr Fraser sent a further message concerning Sir -Julien’s werk for - child welfare. -
